Ampeg V4 Club

V4b1stGig_zps4aa6623d.jpg

Already have a number, but now it's no longer honorary!

hello, I have a question :

my vintage V4-B sounds AMAZING, like perfect. I'm just atraid to run it for, say more than an hr., because it gets HOT. it doesn't hav a fan.

does anyone here have a fan mounted on the back of their V4??

If so, can I get some pics for ideas??

I LOVE the sound of my VR, but it can be a bit much in the smaller rooms...

thanks in advance for your responses.

They do tend to get pretty hot. I know one of the resident tech gurus Jon added one to his V4. I believe this is his username/profile (he's one of the B-strings, hard to remember 100% without the avatar), if you shoot him a PM he may be able to help you with how difficult it was to mount/wire one.

For me, I sometimes used a small personal fan plugged into the accessory jack on the back of the head. Might work for you as long as you can be sure it's actually blowing in there and that way you can avoid having to mod the amp.

I used an old V4B 5-6 nights a week for years with no fan on it, and while it did get hot, I can't think of any trouble I ever had with it. It might make you feel better about life to have one on it, but it's not necessary.

4 straight hrs in a hot humid Missouri jookjoint isn't kind to any equipment...but yes, the fan makes me feel better.

I live in Florida.

:p

Rust never sleeps, indeed.

I have a clip-on fan that I use on the back of my V4B. Blows into the back and out the front. I figure it helps keep the tubes cooler in the intrest of extending their life. I have original Magnavox tubes that I would hate to replace with JJ's

Exactly - that thing gets hot. as. hell. and that can't be good on the tubes...

and I won't put JJs or Groove Tubes in my amps.

My VR has USAF tubes in the preamp (it came with EH - yuck!!)

But yeah I did the same thing you did, got a little clip-on fan that I clip on the back of the live-in road case, and it works like a charm.

I wish! I'd probably put the head on top of a twin 215 rig, though ;)

V4-B into 2 2x15 cabs??

Holy hell.

I'd be more inclined to do the 2 2x12 cabs, though (been eyeing those down - expensive though.)

Why'd you go 2x10s over 2x12s??

with all this love for the v4b, I'm getting around to having my 71 v4b repaired. It sounds like a bad filter cap in there somewhere. I have a great amp guy and Im sure he will take care of it. I'm pretty jazzed about getting my amp back.

Anyway, I'm thinking about getting a new cab with it. The v4b is roughly 26" wide and a standard 4x10 cab is 24" wide. That overhang has always bugged me. What options do I have for a cabinet that will fit under my amp (other that the 8x10 or 6x10 ampeg)?

I would prefer something that would fit in a 4 door sedan.

Actually, even the 610hlf is 24". Only the 810e and Pro Neo 410hlf out of Ampeg's current cabs won't cause it to overhang. Not played those Pro Neo cabs yet, believe it or not. Can't find them anywhere around here and I don't have enough endorser clout to get Stu to send me free samples ;) But I hear they're quite good, a little crisper and clearer than their standard cabs but still sounds like Ampeg.

I'd get it fixed and use it on whatever cab you want regardless, though.

Doesn't Ampeg's new 2x12 fit under it when it's horizontal?
