Ampeg V4 modding

The s2012 looks good. What would be the difference between that and the s2512? I'm just concerned about overpowering my speakers. So I don't want to buy something new and have the same problem that I have now. I'm also concerned that changing the speakers would ruin the pairing I have with the V4 head. I know that it's 100 watts all tube power but will I really be able to power 600 watts of speakers with it? You (John) seem like you have a lot of experience with Ampeg and the V4 so please do tell...

Hey John,
Do your modded 4x12's sound more mid forward and less full range than say a 2x15 or 8x10?

they sound very similar to a good (sealed) ampeg 8x10. lots of mids, good highs and easily as much low end, but not as dark as a ported 2x15.

the 2512's have a little more power handling and have a little more mids than the S2012's.
a V4 will be able to power either the 2512's or the S2012's easily. IME, it wouldn't ruin the 'pairing' with the head at all.

Also keep in mind that as a bass amp, 100 tube watts doesn't offer gobbs of clean headroom. Im sure that being guitar speakers they can't take as much, but when looking for bass speakers, especially for this head, you want very efficient speakers. Lots of threads on here regarding V4/V4B cab options.

Lots of V4 cab options threads on here indeed. I've checked out a lot of them, and the two most prevelant 12" spkr options for a V4 4x12 cab for bass are:
Eminence Deltalite 2512
Eminence Basslite 2012, both lightweight NEOs

You can start with loading just two spkrs and seal the other two holes, and pad the inside of the box with eggy mattress topper, a-la JohnK style.

Referencing the title of this thread & speaking of MODDING a V4 head, I'm getting mine outfitted to properly accommodate a nice quad of =C= 6550's, which will boost your wattage from 100w to about 130 speaking of "clean headroom" -which I don't pooh- pooh at all, I'm actually very keen. I'm also having one channel's caps to be that of a V4B; a cheap easy thing if it's already on the bench.

I had one more question about putting new speakers in this cab. Am I looking at any wiring changes since the speakers are a much higher wattage? Or can I just put them in and start playing? I know I need to get the same ohm rating I'm just curious about the other.

I doubt if you'll get any where near an extra 30W but even if you did it would be basically inaudible. I do hope whoever is doing the work for you is adding an extra low voltage transformer to cope with the massive increase in heater current.

i put eminece 2512's in mine, but for less $ you can go with the S2102's. either speaker makes the cab ALOT lighter weight, and IMO, it'll sound great and easily handle an SVT (let alone a V4) head.

here's a few pics of my V4 cab(s):

I'd love to visit the Johnk_10 Museum someday! :D
