Ampeg Venture/SGT-DI vs. Mesa Boogie D-800+

That's essentially why I chose to go with the QSC power amp when my B2R died. I was originally going to get an Aguilar AG700, but I loved the SGT so much I'd just be bypassing the preamp on the Aguilar as well... So why would I buy a specifically-voiced bass amp when I'm going to bypass that voicing altogether?

And yeah, the versatility of being able to fundamentally change your sound like that with something that'll fit on your pedalboard is wonderful from a working musician/hired-gun stance.

Really the size/weight is the only downside to the route I went. I'd love to ditch my big ol' rackcase... So if they start making small footprint power amps, I'll be first in line!

Anyway, sorry for the derail!

your story seems to be the obvious trend towards the future. many on this forum basically have stated they've ditched their svt and 810 for a small pedalboard with DI out. modelers apparently are wonderful. my amp and cab sit in the corner of my room and never move. if I played out I probably would go your route though.

I have the same setup, Mesa800D+, Subway 115 and 112, play mix of classic rock and more modern. I want to give the PA a more natural sound than just the DI....I tries the SGI, but I like no speaker simulation better than any of the built-in. Is there something that has a tame speaker emulator? @agedhorse, what would you do? Solder 8k LPF in a JDI?

Also, having a pre-amp pedal into the front of the Mesa might be overkill and complicate the sound. I don't know if it would help to add the pedal into the effects return of the amp and just use the Mesa's power amp.

You are right! It would only complicate things in front.

If you want to add something in front => get something that your amp can't do!

A nice chorus/ flanger pedal (would be my first choice)

or if you like to switch beween dirty and clean get a good overdrive pedal.


Of course you can run any preamp with your Mesa power amp.

You could get a real tube preamp and be (maybe) happy about the difference.


But I don't think the SGT is

1) different enough to be of interest or

2) better than what you have in your Mesa


and that would be my two most important criteria.

The console has all the tools (eq at a minimum) necessary to do this and can do so on a room by room, mix by mix basis.
