Ampeg - what is going on with their quality?

I must say that I've had a few Ampeg products that were outstanding. Better sounding and better built than *other* stuff I had (no need to mention the brands). That said, the last Ampeg product I purchased was back in '96. Has something changed since then? Has the QC really declined that much? Admittedly, Ive been somewhat out-of-the-loop as far as gear acquisition goes. :atoz:

Despite what I perceive as definite issues, the Micro CL was/is definitely on my list. So too is a BA108 as a little practice amp.
The reason is simple... no one makes anything else quite like them. Have not seen any other micro stacks available at all so if you want one (and I do) Ampeg is pretty much it. Meanwhile the BA108 has two inputs, a CD volume control and 25 watts... features I have not seen in other practice amps.
Were it not for all these warning signs and the decision by pretty much all of the regular stores I frequent to stop carrying Ampeg, it would be easy - I'd probably have purchased both by now. Instead I'm reconsidering if I even want a bass micro stack and I'll probably end up with a Rumble 15 as a practice amp.

If you do decide to go Fender, do yourself a favour and upgrade to the Rumble 30, or the older 25 watter. Great little single 10 practice amps, tone is more grown-up than anything I've heard with an 8" or 6" speaker. Goof-proof limiter on the 25's, never seen a dead one.

Thanks Steve. Appreciate the info. The 30 is definitely worth considering. My only issue with it is the weight. It's pretty heavy for a practice amp.

Yup. I was dead set on a portaflex a few months back, and tried to buy two different units at a local store. One burned out in the store while I tested it, the other crapped out when I got it home and thus went straight back. The store, which used to have a bunch of Ampeg combos, has Acoustic stuff now and hasn't restocked any of it's Ampeg gear recently. Might not be related, but it's definitely not been that way historically.

All that said, I LOVE my new Micro VR stack (ordered online). Only had it a few weeks, but for a restock the quality seems fine. And it sounds like old school Ampeg, most importantly. I pushed it pretty hard at a recent practice, and it performed beautifully.
