Ampegs vs good value brands?

The PF350/500/800 line sound fantastic and are a great value price-wise, even compared to budget lines. I have an 800 that I just love. That said, I'm being seduced right now by the chewy goodnes of a Fender 100T/115NEO stack. I've resisted so far because my current PF800/GK410NEO just does the job week after week but I'm liking that amp with a 115 or two.

Tubes are worth the money. However, Ampeg and I broke up a while ago because of reliability issues. Maybe I came along in a down time in their history; I don't know. In my search for a tube amp, Fender's Super Bassman had everything I wanted/needed and it is more versatile than the SVT. So, ultimately no. Ampeg was not worth the money. But since all of this is purely subjective, I cannot answer for you, OP.

Idk, my drummer has one at his place and I think it sounds god awful even with my b7k in front. Much worse than the 4 pro imo. That's not the only time I've used one either.

In all honesty it isn't my favourite amp. To be fair though, none of the b series (which were inexpensive in order to attract beginning basists on a budget) amps, of which the b4r was the best, were very good. The only way it could really drive a fridge is mono-bridged (which required a special cable) and even then it had a couple of hundred less watts than the true SVT4PRO. Cheers.

Ampeg hasn't been made in Vietnam since 2008 and was only made there in 2007 and 2008 till they fired the head idiot of LOUD.

I stand corrected, i see they manufacture in Missouri now, but i have a hard time believing that the whole product line is USA made but i suppose i should investigate further. However I still do not think highly of any post St. Louis music Ampeg stuff (and to be honest not really a fan of Ampeg in general). I have never met a piece of new ampeg gear that i felt was worth what was being charged for a time of sale (brand new I'm speaking of).

Nope, not Missouri anymore. China and Woodinville, WA. SLM was made in Missouri, though, and while they had some real nice stuff now and then, I wasn't a huge fan, either. I think the stuff they make in China is actually better than SLM's best stuff.

As long as you have the production quantities to fly an engineer over for quality control. Or build a whole city o so you own the production. Outsourcing stuff is kinda dodge.
Why fly anyone over? There're engineers everywhere.

And I'm pretty sure that outsourcing happens with every major manufacturer, from Fender, to Ampeg, to IBM, to Toyota and Honda.

I know 2 tool makers who don't know each other who get flown to china regularly. outsourcing must be par for the course with all electronics. there would be things like certain caps/resistors/etc that are no longer produced locally.

So you can send your own guy that you know to supervise. Engineers are not all equal and outsourcing them gives the same issues as outsourcing. Which is lack of control.

So you believe that an engineer is automatically more qualified, depending on his country of birth?

I say that you hire the right people, and put them in charge, regardless of origin. If the company president or directors want to go down and press the flesh, no problem, but if they believe they need to be more hands on, they have the wrong people in place.
