I used to use a SansAmp RBI into the PA, but the footpedal works just as well (just a few less features).
yeah im kinda leaning towards a sansamp. But there is a couple diffrent models, and i dont have the opportunity to try one myself. (based in norway, never heard of sansamp before joining TB :| )
Aguilar Tone Hammer looks like it was made for this purpose. I haven't tried it yet but it's in the mail!

Although I have a couple of SansAmps in my rack, I still prefer to bring a cab to gigs. But, it is a great feeling knowing that in a jam, I'm ready to roll with just the rack itself, leaving the cab at home. The SansAmp BDDI pedal would be a good solution if you didn't want to use a rack mount unit.

yeah, i also prefer my amp But i think it would have been nice to just toss a little box in your gigbag and off you go !
Sansamp Bass Driver.
I've used them for years but be aware that some players really don't like them.They tend to cut the mids a lot & there isn't a dedicated middle control.
I like mid cut a bit so it doesn't bother me.I go direct with mine when I'm using PA support & I use it as a pre amp with my big rig. It sounds great (to me) both ways.
I am really curious about the Aguilar Tone Hammer though!

You aren't crazy, and that is exactly what it means. It was/is intended as a direct box. I use it every week as a direct box for the house, and a tone generator into my regular amp.
Countryman Type 85. I always keep one in my pedal bag. The only gigs I've done where I didn't bring my amp were acoustic so I was just running my fretless direct to the board.
