Double Bass An Ehrlund blog, sort of

Weird EAP problem here. I have been discussing my problema with the EAP on another thread because I noticed it first when I got a new amp so I thought that the problema was related to the amp/pickup combination (you can read it here: The New Acoustic Image Clarus+ Series 4 | Page 4 | TalkBass.com). I'm sure now that something very weird has happened with my EAP:
I have been using the EAP pickup without its preamp for two years plugging it straight to my Aguilar TH500+SL112 with good enough results (good volumen, full tone although not a pure acoustic sound). A friend lent me his Acoustic Image Contra and I loved the sound, that my bass but louder tone that most of us find as the ultimate amplified goal, you couldn't say if the sound was coming from the amplifier or from my bass, great acoustic tone. I just got one of the new AI Coda S4PLUS and when I plugged the EAP I could barely get any volumen so I thought that maybe the specs of the input where different between the Contra SIII and the new CODA S4PLUS. My friend lent me his AI Contra again and this time I could not get the same tone/volume than in the previous tests.
I contacted Ehrlund to send the EAP for a test but when I was taking off the EAP from my bass to pack it I did a last test with a weird result: I tacked it to the bass using the tack on the side with the Ehrlund logo (which means upside down) and although I don’t think it sounds as full and loud as it used to work with these particular amps (AI Contra and AI Clarus), now I’m getting a much louder/better signal into the amp. I will keep experimenting along the weekend to see what happens. I have also contacted Ehrlund to give them this new information.
Has anybody experienced a problem like this?

I wanted to let you all know that I sent the EAP to the manufacturer and they have already sent a new one free of charge. Excellent customer service! Couldn't be happier.

Wonderful! They've been very solid and supportive in the past, glad to hear that's still the case.

+1 I had to replace all the screws in my Ehrlund Pre Amp, two weeks ago, Johnny B sent them to me in less than a week. Ehrlund's a very nice company to deal with. Great people.

Hey guys, I've been hunting around talkbass for any information on what the EAP is like for slapping but I can't find anything - anyone given it a go?

I play mainly pizz and do a bit of slap from time to time (old school RnR... nothing psycho) and I just want to make sure that the EAP can handle alright.

I'm currently using a Fishman FC; this pickup comparison was great for checking out the EAP (So much more natural than the FC and not too far off the DPA mic!):

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks

Steve

Steve,
I used the EAP for around 4 years now, so if your looking for a pickup that replicates the sound coming off your bass acoustically, then that's what the Ehrlund does best. You'd be wise to purchased one from Gollihur Music, because
they offer a trial period for the pickup. IMHO, it's an absolute necissity to have the either Ehrlund Preamp or a Headway EDB-2 to get decend gain levels, and EQ the pickup properly. I'm sure there are other Pre's that will work just fine
but I'm only familliar with those two. On my instrument it's arco and pizzicato sound are wonderful.

I've also been using the EAP for years and I echo Ric's comments. Ric-- have you ever had a chance to listen to how well fingerboard noise (such as produced by slapping) is transduced via the EAP? I'm guessing that the sharp high-frequency transients that one hears near the bass might be somewhat muted as picked up by the EAP from the top. That's just a guess-- maybe you could give it a try if you haven't already.

That's great to hear that you guys have been enjoying the pickup for a number of years. Yes, if i buy it I'll go through ghollihur and I'll definitely get the preamp. I just don't want to purchase if the slap sound is horrible (eg. Distorts).

Distortion will not be an issue at all with the EAP. I was curious about how much of the "slap" would come through clearly. I can test it for you a week from now when I'll have the rig at a gig. I was hoping Ric might be able to give you an answer more quickly.

That's good to know. By the sound of Landos pickup comparison it gets a good amount of finger noise so I'm guessing it'll get a bit of the slap click. I will await Rics reply. I've also emailed Gollihur to get their thoughts.

Steve,
Well, I'm not well versed in slap technique, I have on ocassion done a few slap accents on Brazillian tunes, so it does work. You'd have to try it yourself to see if it does what you want.

Great, thanks for that Ric. Just knowing that it won't sound like crap if slapped is good.

My Fishman FC doesn't really reproduce any of the slap, so if it's any better than that, it'll work for me :-)

Thanks again for the help guys!

If you do end up with the Ehrlund, it might really be worth your time to start at the beginning of this thread. There are many good tips about placement and use. I'll quote myself for one of them. :)

My solution for re-placing the EAP is to surround it with blue painter's tape before removing it. The painter's tape is quite helpful when you're trying to find the sweet spot because you can evaluate new positions and then return it rather precisely to previous ones.
