Double Bass An Ehrlund blog, sort of

And there are still a few other threads dealing with the placement of the Ehrlund. I finally got one a few weeks ago and searched for information myself.

Just to give some initial information: I got feedback rather quickly with an amp at home. That did not happen on stage, but volume was moderate. Found a spot at home that reproduced the arco sound well but was too dark for pizz, also on stage. I heard someone else playing my instrument on a jam session. Too dark for the player and too dark for the listeners.
Directly on the soundpost is very clear, but probably not most natural, but I might try that next time (whenever that will be). Or I go a bit more up to the position Ric Vice uses, which is better for pizz but a bit more bright for arco.
Might be the amp too, it's a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T that punches a bit through.

So feedback might be something to consider if it gets a bit louder as wrote earlier by several Talkbass members.
Also cannot help with the slap thing, since I rarely used this playing technique. And my sound quality expectations with slap are not very high.

I think Ric and I use similar positions for the Ehrlund. Here are older threads for your reading pleasure:

Ehrlund "Sweet Spot", anyone? | TalkBass.com

As for using other pre-amps, MrSidecar reports: ..I can tell you that the Ehrlund pre has an input impedance of about 5MOhms...

That's the loading that the pickup seems to "prefer."

True enough, the Headway EDB-2 has a 5 Meg Ohm Setting and I think that's why it works so well for the Ehrlund Pickup.

Hey guys

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the EAP with the EAP preamp. The EDB-2 looks good but I am keen on the simplicity of the EAP one. I do have a Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Bass that I can use as a swiss army knife if I'm in a particularly nasty room.

Thanks again!

without knowing the Headway, I can tell you that the Ehrlund pre has an input impedance of about 5MOhms, so the highest setting is likely to work best.

Good move. Please let us know how it goes.

How would one get an EHRLUND when one is constantly traveling?? I'm in southhampton in 2 days then Livorno, civitavecchia, a few ports in Spain ? Do stores carry them??

I'm on a cruise ship and need to get one but constantly changing cities!

Help! Need one!

I talked to two music stores in southhampton and they don't want to order it for me from Jonas in Germany..

The best hope is a specialized store in a capital city, but even they usually order on request. Luthiers order on request. The EAP is a very special pickup with a relatively high price, so almost nobody has them in stock.
Jonas is an exception, but your cruising ships won't get to Frankfurt/Main in Germany. And the only other store I know that has them in stock are the Gollihurs.

Do you know any private person where Jonas can send it to and you can pick it up in a few days?
Maybe a harbor management in a city you will reach in about four to five days during the weekdays if you talk to them in advance and ask if they can hold it there until you come along and pick it up?
What about the cruise management? They need to get things onto the ship and someone in the cities is responsible. Ask the staff on your ship how that could work for you.
What about a staff member in Southhampton where you return to each time. Even if you miss it this time you might pick it up after the next cruise. Check with the staff in Southhampton when you return, let them give you a name and address where it could be deposited for you, order from Jonas to this address and pick it up after you returned from the next cruise. I think that is the best solution and it should work. Anything else gets complicated and you might miss the arrival of the pickup.

Shortening the cable yourself is not easy, but I guess you cannot give back a pickup with a shortened cable. The original long cable has a plug that goes into the preamp. If you get the shortened cable with the jack, you need a plug-plug cable to the preamp!

It's hard to say what is better. With the long cable you have more options to look for good spots on your instruments (check every one you have), then you can better decide which length would be appropriate. On the other hand, for most of the positions down the bridge the cable length Jonas makes is OK.

Keep in mind that this is not a bass specific pickup. You can use it with a violin and may need a longer cable there when you clip the preamp onto a belt.

If you want to drop the preamp on the ground you need either the up shortened EAP cable or a 4 to 5 foot cable from the EAP jack to the preamp on the ground.
I padded the preamp a bit and clipped it to the back of the bow quiver (which is made from thick leather).

I'm still in the experimenting phase with the Ehrlund myself with a shortened cable EAP from Jonas, so I know some of the issues.

Yeah I'm probably going to have to do something in southhampton and get someone to hold it..

Sending stuff to the ship sometimes takes a month or longer if they get behind..

When I order from Jonas, should I get the shorter cable and switchjack?

Notice which jack Jonas uses. ;)

DoubleMidi is right on target that it's not an easy job to shorten the cable unless you have good soldering skills. As I posted on page 2 of this thread:
...In recognition of the EAP being a keeper, I just shortened the cable and installed the Gollihur-supplied female jack. I don't mean to sound like a soldering elitist but, if you don't have experience and really good soldering skills, you may not want to tackle this. The wire is very fine. I used a temperature controlled soldering iron, a desktop vise to stabilize the work, a scalpel, a hemostat to hold the wire in place, heat-shrink tubing and a heat gun. Just an FYI. ;)

Ok well I guess I won't get the shortened cable.. I can pay extra to Jonas to shorten the cable and also buy some switchjack (I guess the female plug)

So those are options from buying through Jonas.. I would not be doing that myself

Is it worth getting an EHRLUND off amazon? Maybe they don't have them but I'll have to check..

Just because they have an Amazon drop off point here

Have you tried contacting Daf Lewis? He's the UK distributor for Ehrlund and a very nice guy to deal with. Let me know if you need his contact info.

Please give me that contact info.. I went to a few different places and they all said they won't order it for me and hold it..

So I need to see what options Daf has..

I still am not sure why I would need the Switchback cable thing.. Do i really need that female connector switch?

I don't want to shorten the cable.. I think it will be fine the length it is..

but the other switchback cable thing I don't understand why to use that..

anyway I'd really appreciate that info on Daf Lewis..

thanks.
