Double Bass An Ehrlund blog, sort of

I am starting to feel either way is fine..

I just want the best way that allows less loss of signal and or helps with not causing knocking sounds and extra noise..

Is that way with the switchjack or not? for the best possible sound and not any possible signal problems..

thats what I'm trying to ask..

...Here's my advice (again):):
1) Have the cable shortened but kept at a length that is sufficient to position the pickup over a wide range of locations. Make a single loop with the extra length.
2) Terminate the cable with a Switchcraft 121 TS jack mounted on the tailpiece.
3) If you want the pre-amp mounted on the bass, then run a very short cable from the Switchcraft jack to the pre-amp.
4) Run a cable from the bass-mounted pre-amp to your amp.

I don't know how else to say it. Yes, shorten the cable and terminate it with the Switchcraft 121 TS.

Ok got it.. So either way.. I"m good to go.. I appreciate all the responses..

I can't wait to see if this is going to be a big failure or success! haha..

I'll post up the results of course in 2 weeks.. this should be hilarious with an eminence bass as there isn't really any full body but atleast a chamber.. but hey, who knows. Maybe it's closer to the sound i'm looking for..

yes, I was just debating on whether or not to have the switchjack TS put on or not.. that's what I was confused about..

I get the shortened cable part.. It's having the switchjack that I was trying to wrap my thoughts on..
Switchcraft 121 TS jack. Yes, I suggest you have that done. It allows for flexibility and it makes a very secure connection. If you leave the Ehrlund plug on the end, then it's much more difficult to change the arrangement as the need/desire arises.

If you read through the 39 pages of this thread you will find a lot of ways to mount either the complete length with the plug or the shortened cable.
It's more a matter of convenience.
If you plan to sell the EAP to a violin or guitar player, the shortened cable might become a problem. But I think there are enough bass players that old be interested, just in case.

Just think about getting the shortened cable a few inches longer than standard to be able to reach every place on the bass top. You can loop the extra length if you find a good place that is close to the tailpiece.

Just write from whoever you get the pickup, that you want to reach any point on the top (also towards the neck) and still have a small loop in the cable for mechanical decoupling.
If you later decide to want the cable shorter you can find someone with good soldering skills to shorten the cable again. But I would wait about a year until I would finally decide.

If you shorten the cable to mount the end at the tailpiece (otherwise you have the same mechanical problems as with the unshortened cable) you need a jack and the Switchcraft is one of the best (the other one is a Neutrik).

Notice which jack Jonas uses. ;)

FYI - I noticed some talk and links back to talk about the jack we include with the EAP. Back when DrURB mentioned the jack we were supplying (for free, by the way) it was a fairly common, inexpensive jack. We did, after some talk with him and a couple other customers, decide that it was not up to the quality of the pickup we were including it with.

So, for quite a while now, we have been supplying a much nicer REAN (by Neutrik) jack, which is much nicer, more robust, and far more compatible with common instrument cables. And it's still free with the purchase of the EAP.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Thanks for adding that, Mark! I wasn't aware that you changed the jack and that's really good news. Just for the record, even when you were supplying the other jack, as you know, I commended you on that offer. That you even supply the upgraded version free makes your deal on the Ehrlund that much sweeter.

By the way, is the jack you supply the Switchcraft 121 TS?

TheInvalid Link Removed is a beefier product but is about six times the price of the REAN. For DIYers or those who might have someone else do the work, I think the Switchcraft is worth the $8.00 investment. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect that something like that would be supplied free of charge.

In any case, kudos to you, Mark! :)

by the way Mark Gollihur, I should have bought everything from you.. like I have before.. but I'm in the UK right now so..

I spent over $1000 on pickups from this Jonass guy in Germany and told him many times I needed my stuff by september 13th and here it is and nothing has arrived and it's not going to get here in time.. go figure.

Now I'm going to have to wait another 2 weeks before I can use what I ordered.. and I Still don't have any confirmation if he sent anything even yet..

why do people recommend this guy again?

The last registered letter from London to Germany took about a week. Last packet from London to Germany (about ten years ago) took at least ten days.

Nobody can guarantee when something will arrive. The best one can do is giving a tracking number.

Jonas is a very nice and reliable guy and a lot of bass players are happy dealing with him. Have you checked with him if he has the pickups in stock? If not he might need to order them before he can send them out. If he needs to get the Ehrlund from Sweden it may take another week until he gets it from there.
Talk to him.

How are you having Jonas ship the order? Of course, FedEx and like can move a package between Germany and the UK in far less than 10 days and can just about guarantee when it will arrive. Granted, one has to pay for such service. Did Jonas tell you when it shipped? By most accounts, he's a straight-up guy. That's also been my experience when I've communicated with him.

He seems nice yes I think he is good but I don't understand what went wrong with my order.. He has my 918 euros now and it's past September 13th and now I'm outta luck on my pickups..

I come back to Southampton in 2 weeks now and have to deal with the worst sounding bass sound for 2 more weeks which ruins the gig for the entire band..

You can imagine how pissed I am..

I think he will send them but he hasn't responded to my email yet.. I think he isn't going to respond till Monday..

He also never told me how he will ship them. (I did send an email asking) I can picture that here too!

I stressed in many emails my time constraint and that I'm on a ship.. I don't understand where it went wrong..

My best guess is either emergency or he didn't understand what I kept trying to tell him..

All I know is I order tons of gear and things and there won't be another $1000+ (900 euro) order Going his way for more gear ever again.. So he is out of my list of recommendations for anybody needing to know places or people..

The Daf guy will get the rest of my orders.. In the UK.. (I only didn't use him because I wanted the 3 pickups and Jonas supposedly had them.. (Apparently not though)

I'm think he will send me the 3 pickups but what a bad professional way to do business.. Trust me guys I have the paper trail in emails.. We talked about everything but why he isn't shipping it yet..

I'll find out on Monday

Got the EHRLUND today! And 2 new pickups today..

Could only use one of the three and just barely! Haha

I couldn't really use the EHRLUND cause (like everybody already knew..) the EHRLUND doesn't really pickup a mini bass body (eminence). It just sounds really thin but the funniest thing is that the EHRLUND Is the closest thing to what I wanted.. Maybe I can keep trying to move it around and see if it can get any beef to it.. But odds are it won't cause of the small body..

I couldn't put the shadow on because the bridge has to be shaved more for it to fit..

I then proceeded to try to put on the full circle adjusters and they fit correct in the threads but then the other side didn't want to fit in the feet!!! Go figure!!!

What a day.. So then by complete and udder ridiculous luck and God send miracle the ship I'm currently in has two other four string versions of the eminence bass! So I tried the feet of the 4-string old eminence bass and it fit..

So now I have to use the feet of a completely other 4string eminence bass to use the full circle on my bass haha.. Got to love life..

It would be nice to get the EHRLUND to somehow work with the eminence - I tried to E.Q. Al, the bass up and took out 1000hz and it started to sound ok but it just won't push enough..

I did get it to feedback and I am sure I lost some hearing attempting that..

Thoughts ideas?

I need to somehow fit the shadow correctly on my bridge wings and then somehow use my original feet of my bass for the full circle but the threads fit but just bit the other side that goes into the feet..
The feet of my bass seem very thin and wimpy ha.. And the holes not the feet is small -

So is that something I can have a luthier drill bigger holes in the already drilled holes of the bass feet?

Ideas how to make the EHRLUND pickup beefier on a mini bass body? Should I put it on the back and maybe bigger or smaller putty balls to get it louder??

Pictures if needed and or interested..

Oh and when I did use the full circle with the other basses bridge feet on my bass, it sounded loud and boomy on the B, E, A strings.. But little thin on the D and really lighter on the G string.. The G string was actually kinda twangy.. That maybe just my string or the way the bridge holds it right?

Would changing the G string to something brand less twangy help that perhaps? Evah pizeralli G string ??

Crazy update right?

OK, I finally got my EAP and preamp (it got stuck at Customs for over a week and then I had to get some help doing the jack change).

All I can say is "Holy Moly" this thing sounds sooooo good!

Be aware I haven't gigged it yet so I have no idea what it's going to be like in that environment but I have my fingers crossed.

I quickly recorded some comparisons between my Full Circle and the Ehrlund to hear the sounds without acoustic bleed and am blown away. The Full Circle sounds like a very compressed and mwah like version of my bass. The Ehrlund sounds like my bass!

Check the attached recordings out. My lame attempt at sort of Ray Brown's intro to Blue Monk.
(Note, I have gut strings on, am using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface. Also I did these in a hurry so there are mistakes etc..... don't judge me)
