Anesthetized, Root Canal In Morning, Gig That Night

In two weeks my band's drummer will be completely put under (general anesthesia) at 6:30 AM; he'll then receive a double root canal. We have a 3 hour gig that night at 8:00 PM that he fully intends to play.

I'm skeptical that he'll be completely up to the task. I don't know that I would be either, and I definitely would not have scheduled surgery the same day of a gig. He's a tough guy and generally in good health, but his timing seems to deteriorate when he drinks a little too much, or when he is on prescribed steroids (as he was last night at rehearsal).

That said, there's nothing I can do but hope for the best, and I'm not really looking for advice; I just want to hear about YOUR similar experiences.

I had a double root canal with local anesthesia and was fine in the evening. I found the root canal to have less pain than a simple cavity filling.

Your drummer should be able to sink his teeth into the performance. If you truly are worried, why not have a standby drummer in case you need to extract him?

Could go either way. I've had sedation dentistry via both IV / gas and high-octave Valium. Keep your fingers crossed and hope somebody else is driving.

Funny story: wife took me the local IHOP after the "Valium" procedure (IHOP = soft food). I was washing my hands in the WC when the second wave hit me. Wasn't sure where I was but one of the diners looked suspiciously familiar.

I get physically drained after such things. Hes a guy and you say hes healthy, but idk. All day from 6am, being UNDER and then going all day to then be a dummer at 8pm for 3 hours?

I played a gig 3 hours after getting out of hospital after a Renal transplant and losing a total of 26lbs in diseased kidneys and weight...
He'll be right as rain.

The aftermath of a root canal is less than after an extraction. After all there isn't a lot of healing after a root canal. But I've never had general for a root canal.

He'll probably be fine. Unless he isn't.

Has your drummer ever been under general anesthesia before?

Better REALLY make sure he knows EXACTLY how he reacts to it. Some are fine, some people have terrible nausea and wooziness. Two weeks seems enough time to find a sub drummer or sub band.

Haven’t played after a root canal, but did do a gig after knee surgery. I had a general for that, but don’t recall having any after effects. I did do the gig sitting down with my leg propped up on a box.
Couldn’t miss, we were opening for Blackfoot! It was actually Ricky Medlock and three young guys, but they called themselves “Blackfoot”….

I played a show few hours after a root canal under a local anesthetic. I was also perscribed a painkiller but didn't feel the need to take it since the anesthetic hadn't worn off yet. The show was only an hour long set of three by different bands and we were first up. I figured I was safe. Well, the anesthetic wore off about a half hour before we started and it was very painful so I took the painkiller. The painkiller took effect a couple of songs into the one hour set and I started feeling a bit out of it. It got progressively worse as the set wore on but I don't remember any major gaffs.

I made it through the set and figured I'd call my wife for a ride home but the venue had invited a reporter and photographer for the event. The reporter wanted an interview with all of us and a photo. Needless to say I was out of it and exhausted and all I wanted to do was leave but I soldiered on and did the press stuff. To this day I have no idea what I said but I do remember the reporter giggling and my bandmates looking at me strangely. I never read the article or saw the photo and I don't think I want to.

At least that's what I think happened.

Anesthesia has a way of screwing with your memory for a couple of day's. Other than that possibility he should be OK after a nap. Oh, tell him to drink plenty of water to help his system out.
