Anesthetized, Root Canal In Morning, Gig That Night

I've had a pretty turbulent dental history including lots of root canals but I've always just had local anesthesia. The good news is that the pain after a root canal is pretty minimal (for me, at least) so he probably won't need much more than acetaminophen at the gig.
General anesthesia is a funny thing; it affects different people differently. The times I've been put under I was pretty loopy for a few hours afterwards but your gig is almost 12 hours later so I'll bet he'll be feeling okay. Maybe not 100% but not flattened, either. +1 on the suggestion he drink plenty of water.

He'll be fine. (I'd take a root canal over gum surgery any day and twice on Sunday, and I've had both.)
General anesthesia? No way. Get a sub.
I'm sure he's tough and all but he'll even be wonky the next day.

Just had a 25 min. procedure at 11 this morning that required general anesthesia, no way I'd want to go up and put on a show tonight.
If he is "going under", get a sub. Surgery affects everyone differently, but it is better to be safe than sorry. I had a root canal and wisdom tooth removal at the same time about 20 years ago. I was knocked out and it hit me like a ton of bricks. In fact, I was out for a couple of days. Plus, he is probably going to be on some sort of pain meds, and they are probably going to be the "may cause drowsiness" and "do not operate heavy machinery" type.
Since when did TB start worrying about the drummer??? Let him play. He struggles, take a solo. Falls over, another solo with maybe some tapping. If he passes out just flip your bass around a few times (like Vic) and keep rocking. Start hitting the symbols with your headstock, etc. You're welcome.
My experience? The first root canal I ever received was about age 28. Had it done early one morning, play league basketball that night. People react in different ways. I worked with a drummer in a studio who really messed up after he took a blood-pressure medication (prescribed). YMMV.
I'm no doctor and have no medical training. I have had quite a few root canals. I've had 5 on molars which all had multiple roots, as many as 4. I would say by gig time, he may be still in pain depending on the degree of infection, but I would be surprised if he wasn't recovered from the anesthesia. Actually, I'm surprised they are putting him under.
I will say this, having to live 2 week with an abscess is enough to make one grab a pair of pliers….
Whatever happens, it'll all be okay! I'm sure he's probably stressing more than you are!

Funny enough, I multi track record my bands practices, and if somebody can't make it I just pull up a take and solo their parts and play it through my monitors. Now that would be a life saver at a show!

I usually say 'never give a drummer caffeine',Triple shot espresso before the gig and he'll be fine...
But in this case it might be just the thing!
Long ago I broke a tooth in half but since it didn't hurt I let it go until on Friday night before a gig. My jaw was swollen ans I was in a great deal of pain, hence I didn't sleep all night. Saturday morning I searched and found an open dentist office that would see me. That dentist said that I would have to be on antibiotics for a week before she would attempt to pull the bad tooth. I insisted that she pull it that day as I had a gig that night.
Reluctantly she broke it to pieces and pulled the pieces out, gave me a prescription for antibiotics and sent me home. She said that I would be in more pain than if I had dome it her way. That night I played a great gig and even sang a few songs!

Yeah I couldn't play a gig after my ordeal, I was bleeding pretty bad due to not being being stitched like I was suppose to be...was a long night, band had a sub that time.
I wonder how many people you killed that night. Totally irresponsible.
So ridiculous, I could say I had the flu, I never tested for coronavirus.he's a murderer! call the police!
