Animal Trapping?

I had to help my daughter with a homework assignment about the cruelty of animal trapping. I could hardly read how they described the 3 methods used. It's absolutely sickening to me, and not to mention it's completely unnecessary.

Which leads me to PETA. They've been getting a lot of media because of the Michael Vick thing mainly. But I'm glad I'm growing more aware of PETA. I'm intrigued about what they stand for, and I like that whatever they do involves some beautiful, naked woman. I've actually thought about going down to the PETA office, finding some beautiful woman, and just saying "If I stop eating animals will you take your clothes off? I think this person would say "No problem, I'm stripping as we speak".

I had a neighbor that used to trap foxes when I was a kid. I went with him to check his traps one time, and it was really disturbing. Foxes will literally chew their own foot off if you don't get to them soon enough. The sheer panic and pain they are going through as they hear you approach is pretty awful, too.

I've got nothing against hunting for food, but trapping for fur is a pretty nasty business. Farm-raised in humane conditions with humane killing methods would be ideal if people simply have to have fur.

I agree with you 100%. I was also exposed to trapping as a kid. That was about all I need to see to loose my interest in it. I'd rather take the same animals with a bow. It might be almost impossible in most cases but certainly more of a challenge!! From what I've read, farm raising is the way the Fur industry is headed.

if this is a joke then fine, but if you are serious, be aware the peta does alot against realistic animal rescue and preservation too. there are many big cat rescues in the u.s., for instance, and peta fights to get them closed. apparently they'd rather see retired zoo and circus animals returned to the wild, where they'd die for lack of hunting skills, than see them taken care of in private facilities where they would have food, shelter and protection.

personally i find their whole schtick reminiscent of that sheehan woman and her crusade against the iraqi war. on the surface, it's a good thing, a good cause, but just about every possible -wrong- decision and ignorant attitude is made in the process.

i would much rather support the humane society that work and live in the real world, as opposed to the purple-skied fairy land that peta seems to live in.

Good points John. I'm honestly just ignorant about PETA and you know that to the average person it *seems* like a good thing if you don't know.

I've trapped in the past.

If you use the proper sized traps and methods, it's really not inhumane. If you use too long of a chain, they can run hard towards the end which can break their leg from the leverage, which can cause a twist-off. Short chains keep them calmer and a lot of the time, if you're quiet when you approach, you can see them sleeping. You also have to check the line frequently.

Plus, muskrat/mink and other water critters can be caught with bodygripping traps which kill instantly, and cable slides can be used near water to quickly drown a caught animal. Usually, it's preferred to do this for obvious reasons.

Those who don't know what they're doing can inflict a lot of pain and damage to the animals; that's why we have a mandatory training class here.

It's a real challenge; getting an animal to step exactly on a 1.5" x 1" pan when it can step anywhere in the forest.

By the way, you can stick your hand in a #1.5 trap and set it off without harming yourself. The purpose is to hold them, not inflict damage.

PETA used to be a valued, respectable organization. But like the auto unions, have become irrevocably corrupted and bastardized. Their ranks are far too permeated with insane zealots worse than bible-thumping religious fanatics ever could achieve. PETA has become borderline criminal in their practices, and their members are too closed-minded and too brainwashed to UNDERSTAND the things they fight for/against.

PETA is worthless, and I respect nothing the organization stands for any more.

And this comes from a wilderness lover and pet owner.
