Animal Trapping?

one of the worst aspects of trapping is that it is not discriminatory. You set out a trap for one animal, but you don't really know what exactly you are going to catch. I am not too familiar with types of traps, but i have never seen a legal type that is meant to kill animals instantly (as was mentioned earlier), I think that would be just a worsening of the non-discriminatory aspect of trapping.

As mentioned before, factory farms for raising small mammals for fur (i.e. mink farms) seem like a good idea, but produce a variety of problems on their own. Taking a large population of animals that have always lived solitarily and forcing them to live in a confined place introduces new opportunities for diseases. Feeding them an unnatural diet of whole-dead cattle (which is what the farm i'm familiar with does) is how prion-type diseases can occur.

Who the hell needs fur coats anyway? I can see why leather is desirable, but wearing fur just seems like an aesthetic desire, or a status symbol today.

i remember, back when i was a mere prat, one night when my parents came into my room. i was asleep, and 'dreamed' that they offered me some meat on a plate to try. it was a small bakelite (that's primitive plastic, to you young'uns) saucer...of beaver meat. i tried it, found it delicious, then went back to sleep.

next day, i told them i had the strangest dream...they laughed and said it was no dream.

beaver (four footed variety) tastes like dark meat turkey.

The fact that you have to take vitamins to suppliment the lack of protien and minerals means that not eating meat is unatural for your body. Also, taking suppliments can cause a bigger problem due to the fact that they are refined differently than how they are provided in meat, meaning that your body will process them differently (in a bad way: possible chance of gall stones and other crystaline build up), point being the best way to get the protien and Iron that is in meat is to eat meat, not take a suppliment later on that you end up wizzing down the toilet (for the most part anyway.).

Personally, I don't agree with you at all. I think, however, that an argument about what we're "meant" to be/do will go down a long road. So, I'll just say that human evolution (broadly defined) mandates changes in philosophy, consciousness, and behaviour. If you are unwilling to accept that, then there really is no debate at all.

I'm not personally attacking you, but I just honestly think that is the only response I can give.

Yeah.... :hmm:

Real quotes folks, soak it up. Mankind is doomed (we have been for a while).

I agree about the doomed part, and I don't agree with all those quotes, but it is very easy to take things out of context. I think some of those quotes display just that. In any case, it is not a crime and people shouldn't be judged if they feel emotionally attached to "animal-kind." It's better to focus on their methods and say, "We don't mind your views, but you cannot use pro-violence methods to try to convince others of them."

Maybe someday, the same line will be understood by all Christians... :)

Frankly you guys are getting so far above me that I just need to know if I should eat meat. I like it but I would like to know if it's a big problem. Also I've heard arguments about trapping -the animal doesn't suffer, etc. I still think trapping just sounds SO cruel. I realize if I were hungry enough I'd do anything, but I'm not. One good thing is; I can't remember the last time I saw anybody wearing fur.

I occasionally eat meat, so I recognize that I am a hypocrite on some level, but... Every time you consume meat, be aware that the animal suffered, at absolute least, to some degree. Many times they suffered a great deal, through horrific living conditions right up to their death.

I personally don't think that can be disputed.

You just reminded me of the first time I found out what veal was. OMG. We are some kinda crazy humans who aren't dangerous and sick at all.

Trapping may sound cruel, but as I've described, if done properly it's not.

Think about how any particular animal in a trap likely would have died in nature if not trapped.

Death by disease, freezing to death, starvation due to overpopulation, starvation due to injury, predation by species that don't care to minimize the suffering of the prey... it goes on and on.

Being held by a paw and receiving a single .22 round to the head is a GIFT when it comes to how animals die naturally.

BTW, faux fur is made from petroleum products. Natural fur is completely natural, renewable and results in no environmental damage for those who care about such things.

When I watch those shows on "Discovery" where they show a Lion mauling its prey to death, or especially eating the cubs of the den (?) the thug just took over, I just think "This world was designed wrong".

Sorry about the temporary derailment.

But that sounds like us making decisions and altering nature. That's (to me) like saying, why wait for natural causes to take hold and kill people. Why not chain 'em to the toilet during a good poo and firing a .38 into their head. I mean, after all, it's so much quicker and less painful than dying of cancer, heart disease, etc.

Even the craziest of folk in this world can justify (in their own head) why their beliefs are the right choices. Think Manson, Saddam, Susan Smith, etc., etc., etc.

Excellent points.

Comparing animals to people is a strawman argument. Wildlife is managed in most areas; the natural order is not a nice thing and you have huge population swings with massive starvation at the high end of it.

Although I love nature and animals, I in no way equate animals to humans so I can't equate harvesting wildlife to murdering humans.

If you take human management out of the picture, you wouldn't be very happy with the reults.

ETA: Also, the comparison is derailing the thread from the original argument of "I feel that trapping is cruel" to "It's not OK for humans to kill animals."
