Animal Trapping?

I'm amazed there are not more PETA members or vegans chiming in here. I myself was never a vegan and was only a vegetarian for about half a year. Now, my diet consists of 90% non-meat products, and I buy non-animal products as much as possible. One of my roommates is vegan, though, so I observe his habits first-hand.

So, I'm not preaching anything here except that it doesn't hurt to think about non-animal products for consumption (in all means of the word).

I personally believe there will be a time when eating meat is a privilege. As the human population increases, the amount of land usable to raise livestock will diminish. More soy and related products can be grown on a plot of land than livestock can, i.e. more people can be fed with non-meat products. The same human overpopulation will likely lead to more encroachment on land that animals currently inhabit leading to a decrease in animal population: more endangered and extinct species equals less hide and fur.

I'm not a scientist. This is just my semi-educated "forecast."

Do you mean that you are amazed more PETA members or vegans aren't defending PETA? I'm confused.

It just seems like there really aren't any posts from someone who does not eat any meat or use any animal products giving more of that perspective. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one person on this forum supports PETA, though. There are a lot of people on this forum.

Scientists can grow cow muscle in a petri dish, so I know I will always have my Ribeye until I die, even if it does not come straight off the cow.

Life is too short not to eat meat.

We are supposed to eat meat, you dont get the right nutrients/protien if you dont eat meat, first thing to happen is an iron deficiency (anemia) where you feel weak and look pale and it can lead to inmunity diseases. There are many other things that happen to your body by just eating veggies, but it really doesnt matter.

Why doesn't it "really matter"? These are interesting things you're saying.

I don't have enough knowledge to speak about growing cow muscle in a petri dish, but you are wrong about your second point. Soy products today contain all the vitamins and minerals needed. Vegetarians in the 70's had health problems, but that is gone today. Using multi-vitamins and eating the right non-meat products gives you everything meat does, and in a healthier way. That's a huge reason most of my diet is meatless. It's much, much healthier.

most animal traps actually kill the animal instantly...

at least the modern traps hunters use

Not most. You don't want to catch your neighbor's cat in a conibear body-gripper. Foothold traps just hold them and you can release them without injury as long as the proper size is used and it's checked regularly. They even make padded jaws that you can use.

I've on rare occasions caught the occasional dog or cat, and they get released without even a limp.

And if we are supposed to eat meat, why do all these doctors say eating red meat is so bad and we need to stop it, blah blah. Also I was just thinking about "Bob Barker". That guy is a vegan I think, and he looks fantastic.

It depends who you ask. For example, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine advocates eating less (or no) animal products, because they're a bunch of quacks sponsored by PETA.

The anti-red meat argument doesn't even make sense on the pro-animal side, because why kill dozens of chickens when you can get the same amount of meat from one cow?

The only 'bad' thing about red meat is that it usually has more fat/cholesterol than white meat. All the talk of 'toxins' and 'inability to digest' is wrong, but colon cleansers will have you think otherwise: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/gruesome/fecalcolon.asp

So you may not want to eat steak three times a day, but one burger isn't going to hurt anyone.

PS: As much as I hate to admit it, vegetarians usually can get the required vitamins and minerals. They typically have trouble with iron and B12, but you can always take pills for that. I often hear it claimed that there are no good vegetarian/vegan sources of B12, but vegemite/marmite both have very high levels of B12... if you're willing to eat them.

This is good to know - thanks! Because of this thread, I love beef and I'm gonna eat it.

I said HUNTING traps as in stuff for animals that dont live anywhere near the city

Eh, I don't live near the "city" but there's lots of people who let their cats and dogs run free.

Usually, even in rural areas, foothold traps are used for everything except water sets because most trappers want to do everything possible to avoid hurting someone's pet.

In PA, it is illegal to use any bodygripping trap outside a waterway, watercourse, marsh pond or dam.

Because those of us that eat meat will continue to and those don't will continue not to regardless of what I say.

The fact that you have to take vitamins to suppliment the lack of protien and minerals means that not eating meat is unatural for your body. Also, taking suppliments can cause a bigger problem due to the fact that they are refined differently than how they are provided in meat, meaning that your body will process them differently (in a bad way: possible chance of gall stones and other crystaline build up), point being the best way to get the protien and Iron that is in meat is to eat meat, not take a suppliment later on that you end up wizzing down the toilet (for the most part anyway.).

FWIW, you can naturally replace the loss of proteins and minerals no longer acquired through meat consumption by eating a diet heavier in beans and legumes.
