Animal Trapping?

If you use the proper sized traps and methods, it's really not inhumane. If you use too long of a chain, they can run hard towards the end which can break their leg from the leverage, which can cause a twist-off. Short chains keep them calmer and a lot of the time, if you're quiet when you approach, you can see them sleeping. You also have to check the line frequently.

Plus, muskrat/mink and other water critters can be caught with bodygripping traps which kill instantly, and cable slides can be used near water to quickly drown a caught animal. Usually, it's preferred to do this for obvious reasons.

Those who don't know what they're doing can inflict a lot of pain and damage to the animals; that's why we have a mandatory training class here.

It's a real challenge; getting an animal to step exactly on a 1.5" x 1" pan when it can step anywhere in the forest.

By the way, you can stick your hand in a #1.5 trap and set it off without harming yourself. The purpose is to hold them, not inflict damage.

I just don't have as much time to do it anymore.

Done properly, it's a perfectly humane and efficient way to harvest furbearers and keep the population density down, since most furbearers are common carriers of rabies, mange, etc.

Of course, going on a line with an experienced trapper will give you a completely new perspective on it, rather than looking at hand-picked, sensationalized worst-case photos taken by those with an agenda. Fortunately, I don't feel like I have to look for acceptance or approval from the mostly uneducated masses when it comes to something I have first-hand experience with.

if this is a joke then fine, but if you are serious, be aware the peta does alot against realistic animal rescue and preservation too. there are many big cat rescues in the u.s., for instance, and peta fights to get them closed. apparently they'd rather see retired zoo and circus animals returned to the wild, where they'd die for lack of hunting skills, than see them taken care of in private facilities where they would have food, shelter and protection.

personally i find their whole schtick reminiscent of that sheehan woman and her crusade against the iraqi war. on the surface, it's a good thing, a good cause, but just about every possible -wrong- decision and ignorant attitude is made in the process.

i would much rather support the humane society that work and live in the real world, as opposed to the purple-skied fairy land that peta seems to live in.

PETA is one of those gung-ho group of activists who think that the end justifies the means. It's best to beware of people who barter their souls in exchange for a "greater good".

Humane treatment of animals should always be the law.

Groups like PITA & Anti Abortion groups are extremists who hurt their cause more than help in my opinion. A radical group is a radical group no matter what it stands for.


I saw a special on Japanese Kobi beef which is supposed to be the best and most expensive beef you can get. The special showed how they have a special breed of cattle that are pampered with clean pens, free roaming grazing, massages (ensures the most tender beef), soft music played to them and even wine. Finally when they must be killed, a spiritual ritual prayer and a humane death awaits them. They believe the best meat can only be had from the most happy & well cared for animals.

We have a few of the fur farms left (yep, it's a dissappearing profession) around here, and not very much of trapping, but it still doesn't stop the PETA/Rights For Animals -idiots making illegal "raids" to the farms and releasing hundreds of the animals into the wild.

This usually means serious losses for the farmer, but also brings chaos to the local ecosystem, killing a lot of the smaller animals as a result, especially birds. Also, many of the released animals will end up starving to death, since they can't find enough food. So, way to go :rolleyes:

I've met this kind of attitude rather universally from all the left-wing/greenie political activist youth - the younger people are, the worse it gets. While many of them are kinda half-blind when it comes to other views in issues, they do have some good agendas here and there. What makes it worse, however, is their lacking ability to make compromises and take small victories where they can. This leaves them out of rational process quite efficiently.

yeah, and then those same folks get older, find religion and turn into ultra reactionary conservatives. heh. :hmm:

"Total animal liberation" according to Ingred Newkirk

which basically means:

No meat, dairy, fur, jello, leather or any other animal derived products*
No animal testing: "Even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it" (Ingred)
No circus animals or zoos
No pets

Basically, animals will be totally separate from us and there will be as little interaction as possible.

*for extremists this also includes no refined sugar, honey, sponges and all kinds of other things that are in some way tied to the animal kingdom.

It's a pipe dream, and it creeps me out.

Also: patients who require drugs and things derived from animals would **** out of luck.
