IMO the cross-breeding of different species of plants or animals over the centuries hardly qualifies as genetic engineering. Unfortunately this is how we got killer bees, an accident, but too late now I guess.

My main gripe is when it is sold to us without even knowing we bought it. Maybe I don't want to eat rice that has animal DNA in it. Maybe I do not want grain that is engineered to absorb pesticides easier. The list goes on and on...mostly because somebody with a big head thinks they know what is best for everyone else, and they can make a buck of course. I could probably draw up a long list of countries who have banned GMO food products, but in the USA we are not even allowed to easily know if it is in our food or not. Seriously???
Argggh.
So I guess my main worries are: accidents which could destroy our food supply, or make everyone really sick and, greed getting in the way of common decency. And I am sure most people would feel the same way. Unfortunately most people are very ill informed.
So, since I have your ear, all I can ask of you, being a person in your position, is that you have the insight to consider these issues throughout your career. You never know, one day somebody may ask you to do something very unethical. I am sure it happens all of the time. I have to wonder about the scientists who are asked to make the next Anthrax weapon, or the next killer chemical. I would expect these well educated professionals to just say no. If this were the case we would have no nukes, no chemical weapons, etc...
Tell the Neanderthals to go back to their clubs and stones, lol.
But anyway, this has gotten way to heavy, I am gonna go back to trying to figure out how to turn all of my basses into one super-bass!!!

I apologise for my previous short remark.
I thought you were just narrow minded, and I am bored of arguing with people with no clue or interest about getting a clue. You actually sound pretty reasonable.
I asked originally because I am one of those "evil scientists" that "mess with mother nature".
I disagree about your conclusions, but I respect why you arrived there. The problem is not the technology but how it can sometimes be misused due to greed.

Sorry I was a little harsh.
