Why is genetic manipulation bad, according to you?

Because you don't mess with mother nature, and genetic manipulation is bad science messing with mother nature. A good example would be the gmo food which is being forced down our throats. Anyone can do the research and find that it is not healthy, there is a lot of documented info. It is amazing that food labels are required to report food allergy info, but as hard as we the people try we cannot get gmo info on the label. The corporations who have vested interests are fighting it any and every way possible and that is a fact. Obviously having a patent on a seed is a very powerful thing. I think most people understand that greed can over ride common decency or the common good, it happens all the time. If anyone is surprised they are naive.
Anyway I really can't talk about it anymore because there are politics involved and such.

That's a bit of a broad generalization. You wouldn't consider the smelting of metals a bad thing just because some people weaponized metals in the form of land mines, for example, would you?

Also, many of the regular crops we have have been developed over centuries of messing with mother nature.

Some of my research was attempting to creating a cell line expressing a mutated gene which is occurs in >90% of pancreatic cancers so the behaviour could be observed, that was genetic modification.

I work with numerous people using knockout mouse models, to allow us to better understand how to treat disease and inflammation, those are created through genetic modification.

Do you know any diabetics? Chances are they are getting insulin which is produced via genetic modification. How about vaccinations (for that fun fun topic)?

Well I would agree that genetic engineering/modification for medical one-on-one help is a great idea in theory. Unfortunately the science is only as honest/smart as the individuals doing it. Nevertheless I believe some great things come from it.

IMO the cross-breeding of different species of plants or animals over the centuries hardly qualifies as genetic engineering. Unfortunately this is how we got killer bees, an accident, but too late now I guess.

My main gripe is when it is sold to us without even knowing we bought it. Maybe I don't want to eat rice that has animal DNA in it. Maybe I do not want grain that is engineered to absorb pesticides easier. The list goes on and on...mostly because somebody with a big head thinks they know what is best for everyone else, and they can make a buck of course. I could probably draw up a long list of countries who have banned GMO food products, but in the USA we are not even allowed to easily know if it is in our food or not. Seriously???
Argggh.
So I guess my main worries are: accidents which could destroy our food supply, or make everyone really sick and, greed getting in the way of common decency. And I am sure most people would feel the same way. Unfortunately most people are very ill informed.
So, since I have your ear, all I can ask of you, being a person in your position, is that you have the insight to consider these issues throughout your career. You never know, one day somebody may ask you to do something very unethical. I am sure it happens all of the time. I have to wonder about the scientists who are asked to make the next Anthrax weapon, or the next killer chemical. I would expect these well educated professionals to just say no. If this were the case we would have no nukes, no chemical weapons, etc...

Certainly everything we do is heavily scrutinised ethically and there are numerous ethics bodies to get through where I work. No mad scientist stuff.

I don't work in military research, even then, chemical and biological warfare is pretty much frowned upon . Anthrax occurs naturally, for what it's worth
