It is still a fairly cool place, yes, and if you get caught smoking a doober by the city police all you get is a $100 fine or something like that. That said, A2 is quickly becoming a victim of its own reputation as the Midwest Portland, and is getting kind of pricey to live in. That means the city is getting older, richer, and square-er, and the people around who DO do the artsy, fun stuff are sort of the coattail riding pretentious types that do more socializing than creating.

Detroit has some cool art communities that have taken up residence in some of the neglected neighborhoods, and a lot of the people who do art and music in A2 often go to Detroit shows/exhibitions, etc.

One of the sad facts of life is that cool edgy creative young people turn into old richer, squares. And the hoods pay.

When I was a kid Greenwich Village was cool because it was cheap. Now it's the home of the million dollar starter closet.

Detroit is looking like a city in transition. And any place where you can buy a house for a couple hundred bucks has potential.

I liked the boho life style when I was younger. Now I like central heat and a warm bed at night.

I'll be spending four weeks in Ann Arbor this summer, most of my time will be occupied by the summer school I'm attending but I am looking for suggestions. Restaurants, activities, beer shops, etc. It can be in Ann Arbor itself or nearby

I live just outside Ann Arbor (Pittsfield Twp.), work in Ann Arbor, and went to college here in town.

Let me know what sort of thing you're interested in, and I can give you a list of places...

Pissh - I'd be the most fun. Someone mentioned AA being a cannabis de-crim city. The entire state took a setback there, all dispensaries were closed. But someone could still set a brother up. Just saying.

Holy poopie, that's sweet. The last time I did "authentic mexican food" around here I walked out with with a 96$ bill for two (that was yesterday for the record)

Ann Arbor has a great art museum and a natural science museum right on campus. Worth checking out.

I also plan onto splitting the drive there over the course of 3 days which will allow me to spend a little time in Ottawa, Toronto and Detroit. I plan onto seeing the Ford Museum in the burbs but then again, suggestions welcome. Ottawa I know very well but Detroit and Toronto not so much.

Detroit Art Museum is pretty nice if you're into that -some Diego Rivera murals there are not to be seen elsewhere, at least not at full size. If you visit downtown Detroit just remember it's the same as dealing with a strange dog - don't let them see your fear, maintain direct eye contact or make none at all.

The Detroit Bass Players GTG is August 9 at the Motown Museum...9-10:00AM is when it starts I think. Lotsa basses & some of the nicest and talented cats you could meet.

Marcus Miller is in town on June 25 at Shane Park in Detroit. I am going.
