Another Ampeg SVT7 pro

The circuit board on mine failed about 2 months ago, and my shop ordered the part from Mackie, in the warranty process. Still waiting.... Mine is about 1.5 years old rev.C00. So the point is, you might be waiting a while. I love the amp, and have always supported the company, but their warranty process is painfully slow.

I got an email to day from Ampeg " I am sorry Loud does not cover loaner equipment. The only option at this time is to wait for the part"

I got ticked. But to my surprise a phone call, my amp is fixed. So much for the wait thank god. My revision is C00 too. They ended up replacing the whole board. Said it was defective. I asksed what he thought as far as getting something else wondering if it would hold up. I got it December of 2010. You could tell he didn't wasn't to answer the question. So I just let it go and thanked him. We'll see what happens tomorrow night at rehearsal.

It's good that you got your amp back.

If you're considering getting a different amp as a preventive solution to a recurrence of the situation you've just been through, there may have never, ever, ever been another MB800 (or whatever other amp) to have failed, but if you get one, you could still end up being the first person to have one fail. I think your only real solution is to have a backup amp. Assuming cost plays in, get something used that just meets your emergency needs and that will fit in your trunk or in a bag with other gear that your carry.

I plugged in last night an sounded good. Played loud and now I blew the speaker. It has a tear in it 1/3 of the way around. So now I need to recone that. When it rains it pours. Lol. As far as a backup rig, I think I may do that in case. I have a preamp, but that needs to be looked at. I may grab a power amp and go with that as the backup. Just in case.

Sucks to blow a speaker. Was that on your 410HLF cab? Having a backup amp on hand can't hurt (I have a PF500 as a rehearsal rig that's there if I need it). I'm not a GK guy (not my sound) but the MB200 has an awesome form factor to easily fit in the pocket of most gigbags. I also have a couple DI's on hand in case of gig emergencies if you have PA support.

Yeah it was the HLF cab. I'm def gonna look at getting something. I may look at the MB200. Not a big fan but I could use it as a preamp. I do have a power amp but it has issues and needs to be looked.

7 Pro uses Mackie parts? I didn't know that.

"Loud Technologies" owns both the Mackie brand name and the Ampeg brand name....... so "calling Mackie" is the same thing as "calling Ampeg"..........

In another thread, I see that my prediction of a "rev D00" power amp board seems to be true..... there IS one..... Would be cool if they would swap your old one for that......

I agree. I'm glad I didnt get a Rev C00 now as i almost did! Four rev's to get it right?!

I think it's ridiculous. I'm still thinking of spinning it for something else. It sounded great though when I got it back. Almost seemed like I got a little extra power. Maybe I got an upgrade without being told but with all the horror stories with this amp, with the price tag it has its unacceptable imo. They should give everyone the option for an upgrade

If you get a "good" C00 it may be as good as a "D00"......

There is a pretty good chance that the rev D is essentially to make the rev C be more consistent...... you usually do NOT make big changes at this point...... unless an unavoidable problem has to be avoided. Too much danger of a NEW problem.

A LOT of people have 7PRO units, and really, only a few seem to have problems... a VOCAL few, but still a 'few".... the rest of the folks do not seem to have problems. So if they can rev the unit and get essentially all units to have consistent performance at the level of the existing good ones , they would likely do it in a heartbeat.

If they want more than Guitar center business from unsuspecting kids and their parents who do not read info centers like this, they should do the right thing. My 7pro rev c just took 3rd place i.e. does not even go to gigs. I don't have time for stuff that has a "significantly notable " failure rate, with a known suspect board etc where the manufacturer has fixed a lot of em and issued yet another revision and does not put a recall program in place. It could be a sliding scale offer i.e. Just bought your rev C00 last week from GC, get the new improved board for free at the authorized repair facility.
I simply traded for a Rev C00 and would therefore expect a partial, at cost or similar offer. I will be voting with my feet and my wallet re this company in the future. Another company does much better and will get my future support, not to mention several previous purchases.

You're 2 years in. That doesn't seem to me to be something to lump in as "yet another failed 7-PRO."

Yes it does and here is my thoughts on this:

Let's say a musician like c4muzik plays two gigs a month and rehearses twice a month on average.

That would mean c4muzik has fired his amp up 48 times a year or 96 times in a two year period. His experience may be less or more, but I think many here fall in to this type of use. I would wager, many here fire their amps up even less than what I mentioned above.

I would think the SVT 7Pro (Revision A, B, C) can handle this "very small" amount of usage without pooping the bed. I would fault any manufacturer if their product fails within the time period and usage mentioned above.

Some news from Ampeg. I emailed them this:

"I've recently bought a Rev C SVT7-Pro and had issues where it was cutting out power randomly under any circumstance (I could not isolate the cause, only that it was happening even without a bass or a cabinet connected - Possibly due to electricity fluctuations). The distributor in my country replaced it with a brand new head, also a Rev C. So far, so good - but I fear the issue might come back some day.

I've read on TalkBass.com that a Rev D is available now. Could you tell me what has changed between the revisions? And in case I suffer from issues with my amplifier, will an upgrade to Rev D be possible?"

Their reply:

"Rev C SVT-7Pros are the latest version that is out in the field. In regards to your SVT-7Pro how long ago did you buy it, and did you buy it as new, used, or refurbished from an authorized Ampeg dealer? Also, when the amp cuts out, does the peak LED also come on?"

So

1) Rev D is only available as a repair or people are bsing
and
2) Did they even bother reading my email? :p

I didn't send my amp back to Ampeg - I simply ordered a new main board from them for about $315. It took close to 7 weeks for me to get this board. The form factor and component layout was identical (to the eye) to the Rev A00 board I was replacing, but the new board clearly has Rev D00 stamped on it. Whether they are putting this into production units, and how they are versioning said units (should they exist), I have no idea.
