This guy's case was trashed, 2 tuners broken and a big ole chip in the body. Did they throw the case out of the plane at 50,000 feet?

that's absolutely amazing! I never would've checked a bass in a plywood case like that, but still..... . I can't imagine that case looking much worse if I'd thrown it out of a moving car.

I have to agree with this. if the case is not ATA approved or at the least a form fitting case the bass is gonna bounce around in there.

United Airlines strikes again.
There was a song written about them breaking guitars.

I once flew on Southwest with a brand new bass in a hard shell case and they babied that case all the way. Last in the plane, first out. Instrument rode on the top of the luggage cart. I wrote a post about this, I was so impressed.

The employee at Southwest knew about the song that went viral on Youtube about United breaking guitars! I rarely fly Southwest but they really seemed to care.

Big part of it, but that case was trampled. That's on United.
If I ever fly with one of my axes I'm doing bubble wrap, Reunion Continental or similar padded gig bag, and fit that inside an SKB ATA golf club case.

Well it doesn't matter if someones sucks at bass or not, this is just very sad to see I'm always afraid with those airplanes. Never had a bass with me in an airplane, but looking at this I'm sure as hell that I never ever take a bass with me on an airplane!

Many years ago, I was told by an airline employee to never, ever "bag check" a musical instrument. He suggested that I call the airline ahead of time and give them the dimensions of the case. They can look up the type of plane and determine if it will fit in an over head bin or in the closet at the front or rear of the plane. I have always done this and have never had a problem.
