I know that Sterling Ball is offering to do a trial run of 19mm SR5s, and I support his effort.

I think another way to gauge support of the 19mm idea at leas cost would be to release a 19mm version of the import Ray35. I know I know nothing about manufacturing, but my guess us that the import would be a cheaper way to see how such a bass would fair on the market. This approach has worker for other brands.

Reading Sterling's posts it appears that the current way they are going it is a "no cost" option for Sterling. Basically, EBMM will not spend a penny unless the 125 orders are placed in the two week window. If the confirmed orders are placed (and that means 50% deposits receievd for those orders), (from what I gather), EBMM will at least break even on the production costs of retooling. If they don't reach the order threshold, they refund the money and don't incur any production costs. As Sterling said, its win win.

From the sounds of things it doesn't look like there is going to be any promotion or marketing costs around this other than setting up the website to place orders. Ie, it doesn't appear that EBMM will place and ads regarding the new option nor make press releases or promote it on the main EBMM site. I can't really think of a better way for EBMM to do this (from a "incur no costs" perspective) than the way they are doing it. Of course, some may argue that the conditions to get the bass to production are prohibitive and therefore its highly unlikely that EBMM would have to incur the costs anyway, but that's another thread! :)

If the special run is successful, a wide spaced Ray35 still strikes me as a way to pick up some market share for low dollars. Such a bass would certainly cut into Skyline sales which currently compete with MIA Music Man.

I'd recommend you head on over to the EBMM forum and post a thread requesting that EBMM release 19mm wide Ray35s. That would be the best way to draw your suggestion to Sterling's attention. I have no reason to doubt it will be well received! :)

I don't need to leave TB to be attacked. Honestly, I am speaking as long time MM fan. A 19mm spaced Ray35 would probably be a bit cheaper than a 55-01, and it probably take sales from 55-01s & 55-02s, plus ATKs.

I agree that a wide spaced Ray35 makes sense after MIA prototypes and a market has been established.
