actually take the stickers off and that is probably one of the coolest lookin P's IMO!This being the first thread I've actually started, let me say that I've lurked here for a while under another ID, soaking up wit, wisdom, and a little foolishness, before deciding to create a new account to eliminate the user ID with my name in it. I'm not hiding from anybody, it's just that I'm dorky enough without being "that guy who couldn't think up a screen name" (not that I did all that good a job this time).
Anyway, stuartv is a friend of mine, and after seeing what a gorgeous job johnK_10 did on his '66 P-Bass and seeing that blue Jazzmaster Bass on John's website, I decided to take the plunge and have him refinish my '80(ish) Precision Special, which, like Stuart's '66, was originally Lake Placid Blue. Unlike Stuart, however, who's not a blue bass kind of guy, I really liked it .....back before the fire.
Some lessons are hard to learn. A few years after I had acquired the bass in question, I had gotten into the stupid habit of leaving my instruments stored overnight in the place I was playing. Fly by night electrical work being what it is, the place caught fire. The fire was at the other end of the building, but the heat and smoke completely killed the SVT, eventually, and messed up the P-Bass and a couple of saxophones really badly. Lesson learned. Here's what the bass looks like now, after much cleaning and replacing the neck & electronics, and quite a bit of road time.
A far cry from it's former self, but I've played it that way for the past 20-25 years, now. The new electronics are EMG and I got really lucky on the replacement neck (and on installing both myself!).
John says he'll keep me up to date with pictures as he goes through the process and, in turn, I'll post them here. I know a number of folks followed John's restoration of the '66, so I thought there might be some interest in this, as well. Here's what he's going to do to it for me:
- strip the body and refinish it to Lake Placid Blue (in poly, for durability this is not actually a restoration, strictly speaking)
- replace the neck with an AllParts Jazz Bass profile neck with a rosewood board and do the headstock to match the body
- put a parchment pickguard on it
- paint the pickup cover to match the pickguard
- cleanup and relacquer all the brass hardware
- create a new battery compartment cover for the back to match the pickguard color
The color scheme should be exactly like that Jazzmaster on his website that I mentioned earlier, except with gold colored hardware.
By the way, the reference to this not actually being a restoration has to do with the fact that it originally had a three-knob setup (V, T, B) with a little toggle switch to select active or passive mode. I was told when I bought it that this was the first model Fender offered with active electronics, but as some folks have pointed out, they weren't the greatest in the world. Best I can recall, I ran it passive all the time, anyway. After the fire, since money was short and it was the only bass I had at the time, I cleaned it up and replaced the electronics with Dimarzios, with a two-knob arrangement (V, T). I think I still have the third knob somewhere. I later switched to the EMGs and I love 'em!
I just shipped the bass to John yesterday, so let the waiting begin.....

Nothing from John since the news that the body was going in the paint booth on this past Thursday. I'm hoping for some pics soon.
I know, I just stumbled onto that thread. Dumb. Says temp ban so I hope it is temp like 24hrs in a holding cell. Weird thing is, separate, both those guys seem like the nicest dudes you'd ever want to meet, but they certainly didn't take to each other kindly.
Anyway, I hope he's back up and running here sooooooon. johnK_10 is one of better content providers here on TB. So few of us provide real meat around here so it sucks to lose him.

I read the thread and I didn't see anything from JohnK that I would have expected to get him banned - or even a talking-to.

Not targeting you StuartV, but just so everyone is aware, questioning moderation (for example, complaining that someone is gone unfairly) is against the rules too (specifically, rule #5). There are deleted posts that non-moderators can't see so it's kind of useless to speculate things. Moderators also do not discuss infractions other people receive.

The only thing not mentioned in the link about temporary bans is that people typically get a warning, followed by more than one infraction. An exception to this would be something like a spambot, which is banned as soon as possible.
I don't want to continue in this vein...just anticipating a question that I may receive.
