Though to be fair, the spanking study is probably a legitimate study that's reported in a reputable peer-reviewed psychological journal in which the principal investigator recognizes that she found a correlation between spanking and IQ. She may have even built a regression model with her findings. i got my ass whipped growing up. a lot. and i did exceptionally well in high school and hold a college degree. they can study all they want, but they are never going to be able to pin something like intelligence. its entirely too arbitrary.

same with me, im in my last year of high school and am sitting on mid As for most things, but always got a good flick around the ear when i stepped out of line ( not much, i was a good little boy )

Id like to see them run this study on a group of 20+ year olds who were spanked as kids, and see what difference the ability to accept disipline and do as they are told has made in there lives.

That's as much B.S. as the the Yahoo link. You're using deductive reasoning with huge problems with internal validity to answer a question of causality that should be tested through statistical empiricism with controlled confounds. Unless, of course, you're being sarcastic. In that case...

i doubt if a study like that is even possible given the number of variables......but grant money spends just as good as the other kind,so i would expect that any results would mesh with the politically correct views of those that fund them

I had a 'third time, unlucky' rule when my children were growing up. Tell them once not to do something, if they continued, tell them again with a warning that if they ignored me again they would get a smack. Third time, over my knee. Not for a little pat on the behind either, but something that would sting.

Funnily enough, I only ever had to do that about two or three times with each of our kids and they were intelligent enough not to push it because they knew I meant what I said.

My son went to Oxford university and is now on his way to becoming a doctor, so I've obviously slapped all his brains out

I was smacked in my younger days for doing the odd bad thing like hurting my brother or tracking mud through the house and I can safely say that It hasn't effected my learning. I generally get As and Bs in class without listening at all... If anything it has made me more conscious of what is right and wrong. A lot of kids don't know what the difference is these days.

By the way I'm not some old dude either, I'm in grade 12 in highschool

Of course anybody can see the methodological flaws in that idea.

A huge problem is that there are cultural differences in attitudes towards spanking, and also cultural differences that could affect IQ performance. It would be prohibitive to have a large enough sample size to remove those effects.

I doubt that this issue can be resolved by studies. With that said, I don't spank my kids, and they're a handful. There is simply no evidence based answer to whether I am doing the right thing or the wrong thing. On the other hand, it is likely that my kids will do pretty well on a calculus exam.

Although I am pro spanking (In moderation) I think most kids are a handful whether they are spanked or not, it's just the way they are.

I guess what it all comes down to is whether your child will respond well to spanking or not. Maybe other discipline methods are better for some kids than others because of personality differences.

plus, If you resort to spanking because you can't communicate it may be because your not very smart ... and your kids may become a chip off the old block.

Kudos to your parents. They are a rare breed these days I'm afraid. And, kudos to you for respecting what your parents have done for you.
