I know I asked before but I don't think I got an answer what tuning was his Jazz in I know the lowests string was C.

I was under the impression that AJ only went to the Low C tuning on a few cuts for Chaka Khan's recordings, but who knows, maybe he did it live as well?
Thats a good point there, along with his stuff with Al Di Meola. I guess I mean he's not known just for playing fast.
Anthony Jackson needs to be in a distinct category from other super bassists. I say he is the world's best ensemble bassist (although I'm sure some folks like Tony Levin might beg to differ) since he has never been into bass as a solo instrument or melody playing instrument (that not to say that he cannot be awfully melodic when he wants to.)

Absolutely. I only highlighted some of the fast playing as examples that he can in fact throw it down with the big boys, but to me, what makes AJ special is how he approaches his lines compositionally. His playing can stand on that and that alone if need be.

Man his playing on the Michel Petrucciani Trio live in Tokyo is absolutely killing, without having to play fast at all. When he is playing simple walking basslines he alters the chords in a different way through each passing chorus...his ear is simply amazing. It's crazy that he can walk a 12 bar blues and you are able to hear all kinds of various influences in his playing from Jamerson to classical orchestral music.
There's definitely an element of a Classical/Orchestral player to AJ. I played a lot in smaller wind/brass/string/percussion ensembles when I was slingin a Tuba, and I can recognize the discipline it requires in his playing: extreme attention to note length/timbre, dynamic variance, and great tone. When AJ does solo or plays a well-placed fill, his lines are certainly not out of the standard 'licks' books for bassists. Just try playin the fills in Chaka Khan's 'Move Me no Mountain'. Without detuning and trying to play the line on a standard-tuned 5 or 6, its a mutha!!!

He detuned to C-F-Bb-Eb for "Naughty" and "What 'cha Gonna Do For Me" - I transcribed all the lines on both albums and most tracks go below E, which would suggest he kept the same tuning - that's also what he said in his 1990 BP interview. If you hear "Clouds" (1st track on Naughty) he doubles a run with keys ending on a two octave descending C-G-C-C (lowest open C).
And I think the tone he gets from his Fodera is fantastic - that B is as tight as!

And +1 on his tone. Dark and articulate. IMO, what bass should sound like. And yeah, that B string is downright dangerous on the speakers. I remember a track of AJ on a Hiromi album where he takes a solo, and I swear he almost blew out my car speakers.

This vid makes me wonder if this very band played a serious instrumental (organ/string patch keys/bass/drums) on one of the Gran Turismo video games. I think it was GT3, but I can't say for sure. IIRC, it's not the intro theme, but in the options screen for starting a race. There's great bass throughout the game, but I can't seem to find it anywhere on youtube.

AgreedThe funny thing is that in terms of sheer chops, Randy can hang with Anthony. I don't believe that Randy can equal Anthony Jackson's musical vision, but I suspect very, very few of us on this Earth are in AJ's league as a bass visionary.
