Said in the article, he doesn't pay for them... He exchanges his expertise for theirs in a partnership... Nice huh

He shouldn't pay for them and if he ever paid for a bass that is based off of his idea/concept then he's not a smart business man and most of us know that that he is indeed a very smart business man.
Agreed... I didn't mean "nice huh' in a bad way.. in the way of how great it would be to have a top notch builder, custom craft your instrument to your liking for the cost of your input!

I've been playing forever EB & DB and tinker in the garage
it's a lifelong quest for the 'guitar' style alternative to the DB
we all know those 'acoustic' bass guitars ALL suck - no one's really gotten close although folks like Rob Allen & Harvey Citron have made quality attempts
it's also why the 36" scale is important - bass strings just perform and sound differently at longer scales - there's a reason why all bass instruments are the largest of their ilk

That bass is just an incredible piece of playable art.
Having said that, I would love to see that hanging on my wall as a rarely played discussion piece more than as my main bass at my classic rock cover gigs. Be fun to play a $35,000 bass at a $100 gig though.

the value of master's opinion can be priceless in the knowledge obtained
it's funny, I'm no AJ fanboy, but I feel the need to explain WHY
AJ's not even high on my influences list but technically it's very hard to think of ANYONE playing now or dead that is more studious about the instrument, precise/fluent/musical/professional/.../.../.../ than Mr. Jackson
The instrument would be unplayable to me! Thick body, no side dots, no regular jack and six strings - sounds like my worst nightmare. So good luck to the builders and AJ but it's hardly going to have any impact on my bass world!
As an aside. My take on AJ's tone is a fundamental-rich, bright, piano-esque, un-growly, non-overdriven tone. It's seems quite a departure to then go for an acoustic bodied bass. Does anyone agree?

my understanding is that the previous models are sold off, as anthony and vinnie and joey move forward with research and design and ultimately with the creation of a new model.
Anthony is among a small handful of top-tier electric bassists on the planet, with a massive, legendary catalogue, which explains why his 25 years of dedicated field research, recording and performance with a Fodera instrument nets him a so-called "free" bass, as each new model is built based on his exacting input.

that's a shame. his body of work contains both boundary-pushing arcanum and globally recognizable hits.
