Anti-Smoking PSAs

People smoke less now because of the money.

When I started smoking, cigarettes were 65 cents a pack. When I quit they were $1.35. It wasn't too expensive to smoke 3 packs a day. Today that would be impossible for me, financially. Unless I quit having a car, or a roof over my head.

I think people also smoke less because it's not as cool as it once was, health concerns, and general societal disapproval, like banning it from public places.

If you don't have enough money for cigs you need a minimum wage increase. :p

Joe, I am at work so don't have time to look into it; will you please in a nutshell tell me what's the deal with breakfast bars? I"ve never heard such a thing so if I should find a suitable substitute for nutri-grain bars and the like I'd like to know
I'm kinda busy today too, so without going into lots of detail - most breakfast bars are advertised as being healthy, but they're loaded with sugars (mostly processed, too) and chemicals. One won't kill anybody, but over time they're a poor nutrition choice that wind up actually depleting the body of the nutrients we need, as opposed to feed us. Some are worse than others, and there are some choices that are a lot more healthy if you feel you must eat them. Cliff Bars are up there with the best of them. These (Greens Plus) however, are the only bars I ever eat anymore Amazon.com : Plusbar Energy Natural Box Greens+ (Orange Peel Enterprises) 12 Bars Box : Sports Nutrition Endurance And Energy Bars : Grocery & Gourmet Food I just started school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be eliminating just about all processed food from my diet soon. The more I'm learning, the creepier our world is becoming :). We're being fed a whole lotta garbage here in the US. People are fatter and sicker than they've ever been in this country, and other countries are beginning, sadly, to follow in our footsteps. I could obviously say lots more regarding this, but I have lots to do today. Hope this is helpful.

I'll finish by noting that a real food breakfast is of course much better than any bar, but I realize that's tough for many. Fruit and nuts makes a great breakfast. I like to have some yogurt or cottage cheese with that, but I'm learning I have to choose wisely even when doing that. Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm getting extreme about this stuff, but most people I know are sick in one way or another, and a lot of that has to do with what they're eating. I think we all need to really start looking at what we feed ourselves, carefully, and learn to make better choices. It's the only way the world is going to start getting healthier.

OK so just processed sugars and chemicals...all right I thought that there was more to it than that. Yeah I pretty much use bars once in a while for a snack at work, and for a snack for my daughter when I need to tide her over until her lunch is made...I haven't looked in a long time but I think "fig walks into a bar" at trader joe's had pretty straightforward ingredients, so that's all I've been buying for a while.

As far as everything else, yes you do sound crazy, but I am in agreement with you :D the American diet consisting of waaaayy too much protein and meat, and a lot of crap that isn't even really food is ridiculous. I'm making some changes as well, little by little...

Vegetables are what food eats. Now hold my beer and watch me light up.

Actually, I have solved the problem with ads. I don't watch TV. And having never been a smoker, the lure of smoking escapes me. Smoking has always been one of those fascinating things that humans figured out how to do somehow, against all odds. You put something in your mouth and then light it on fire. Who decided that was a good idea? Some really crazy caveman who was trying to impress a hot cave chick, maybe? It's a little like the Japanese eating poisonous puffer fish. If you don't get it exactly right, you die. So, how many people died in the process of figuring out what exactly right was? It's a little amazing, since the fisherman who ate it and didn't do it right probably didn't leave detailed experimental logs for the next person to follow. And, after a large number of people died from eating those things, somebody says: Aha! Let's cook it this way and see how many more people we can wipe out! bwahahahaha! You could go down a list of things like that. Humans are amazingly forgetful and amazingly creative animals.

My point was a little off topic. Why can some products that harm people be freely advertised, and other products that harm people have commissioned advertisements discouraging their consumption?

one of the reasons was because the tobacco industry blatantly lied about the health risks and harmfulness of its products for decades.

Smoking rates are plummeting and these ads certainly help contribute to that I think.
