Any bands out there damaged beyond repair?

Ok blue, you've said it twice now. We get it. We see you.......now go play.

There's no reason why you can't continue to occasionally jam with your friends while searching out a more active band. I still occasionally get together with some of my bandmates from my first high school band (over 20 years ago) and jam. I also play in a "neighbor band", but neither keep me from my more active gigging band.

I think anyone that's active or in-between bands should stay networked in their city. Jamming occasionally and at the right time and place would be a good idea.

OP, sounds like you have plenty of other time to play with different people while keeping your "band" intact. Do you know any musicans outside of the current band you're in?

I'm usually not for promoting anyone to join multiple bands, but in this specific scenario, you really could have your cake and eat it too.

For those who don't see how a band can be "a band" after X amount of time...
There are many bands that took a long hiatus...
So by some people's definition here, taking a hiatus means that the following bands aren't really bands:


ZZ Top - '77-'79 on hiatus, which gave Dusty & the Rev their trademark beards; 5 year hiatus between "XXX" and "Mescalero"

Cardigans - on hiatus from 2000-2002, 2007 to present

Black Sabbath - 33 year "break"; last original material recorded '78, last time original lineup toured together '79. New album and tour in the works with original lineup.

Scorpions - hiatus '85-'87/'88

Black Crowes - hiatus 2002-2005

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - 4 year hiatus


Other bands taking/taken a break/hiatus...

King Crimson
Foo Fighters
Primus
Decemberists
RHCP
Led Zeppelin
etc.


One of my bands is on hiatus as the guitarist is living in another country, indefinitely. He visits, the band jams &/or gigs once or twice per year – we're still a band no matter how long each hiatus stretches the space time continuum. I'm active in two other bands as well as other musical endeavours/one-off gigs/projects etc.

I see your point, but all of those bands mentioned are already big name bands - HUGE name bands, actually...I think the big difference is finding a real reason to keep pushing when you haven't gotten anywhere in the first place, and no one has any idea who you are.

I'd go look for other musicians to play with. Not like you have to immediately quit the current lineup.

Sounds like that band has been together for 2 years too long. I would have ditched it by now. Time to find something worth your time and effort.

The attitude of others is not within your control. Your friends are not really bandmates anymore. If any of you are going to play music again, at least one of you needs to officially call it quits and look for your next band -- and it might as well be you. You'll be glad when you're playing again, whether any of this group stays together or not.

One thing I would NOT do is replace the singer and keep the band name and try to make it like it was before. Even if the rest of you do manage to start over, be a different band and make it a fresh start.
