Any DIY pedal builders on TB? Strut your stuff!

You ever see those miniaturized military tubes that are NOS? Anybody know of a pedal design that uses them with HV...not the starved voltage gimmick pedals? Ebay has tons but I can’t find any info on using them for tube preamps. Anybody?

Some of them are legitimate low voltage tubes and run in the linear part of the load line at well under 100V. I have a few Russian ones that someone sent me that are very similar in some ways to 12AU7:

I haven't ever gotten around to testing these, but I think I have a PCB layout done up somewhere in my huge pile.

I read the US military needed the tubes shrunk down for their 60's guided missiles and Raytheon actually designed a fairly robust, dependable design but the transistor arrived and the tubes went obsolete over night.
Interesting info on that Russian tube!

I might be able to fit one into an existing noval tube board for a quickie try. We don't necessarily need the full voltage swing of a 12Axx tube at a couple of hundred volts for pedal applications, but IMO it's all about running the tube in the load line area that gives the tradeoffs you prefer.

Never have built something of my own design from scratch but I have built quite a few BYOC pedal kits. I am going to start a project soon to attempt to make a multi FX box using BYOC boards.

The box is 14" wide and I think I can comfortably fit 5 effects in it. I had a hard time deciding on making this more for bass or guitar but I think I will do something that works decently for both. Fuzz, overdrive, distortion, delay, and some sort of modulation (chorus or phaser)
 
Any of you have a suggestion for a new soldering iron? My old one needs a new heating element and tips so I might as well buy a new one. Looking at the Hakko FX888D-23BY. If you read through reviews on Amazon almost every soldering iron is rated 50% the best ever and the other 50% say they are Chinese junk. I just want a good, fast heating, reliable soldering iron. Any suggestions welcomed!

What is your budget? Do you want easily interchangeable tips/SMT tweezers? Or just a straightforward station?

Add a clean blend and it'll easily work for any instrument =0)

I love that casing, too - very Moog/Lovetone

I have zero experience with electronics/soldering, but I do 3D model and print, and just today I was thinking to see if I could design and print pedal housings that would be strong enough for switch stomping and perhaps translucent so an indicator LED could just be mounted in the bottom such that when turned on, the whole pedal lights up.

I spent a long time doing effects design etc as a hobby.. I built a lot less than I designed and breadboarded, but I built few doezen of my own designs too.

I just discovered this club, I may come back and do some schematic dumps if anybody’s interested! Especially utilitarian functional stuff,especially utilitarian functional stuff, and some unique compression and dirt ideas

since I kind of fell out of doing pedals, I’ve done some trade work and picked up woodworking, and now I repair copiers and ATMs for a living.. so maybe my newfound competencies and skills, combined with some inspiration and tips from you guys will inspire me to get going again... I was always really frustrated and messy when it came down to the actual builds
 
I love this thread. I have wanted to build for years, but every basic kit I bought and tried went horribly wrong (ie trying to solder in the first resistor and just basically soldering one huge lump). I actually took lessons from SFX (of Thumpinator fame), who was super cool and patient but I just can't seem to retain information well and after 3 months of lessons and him then saying "right, all that was basically school-level stuff" I gave up.

I love seeing builds from people that are not full time brands. I have so many ideas and wish I had the skills to bring them to life.

It started 2-3 years ago, with a workshop by the guy behind LAL. I didn't know how to solder and was totally clueless in terms of electronics. After that, I did 2 kits, then just got PCBs all over the place. I mainly build fuzzes - either stuff that I just want to try out or stuff, because that's gone or hard to get/very expensive.
It's good fun.
