Any info on Yamato?

Hi. Did a search. Didn't yield much info.

I am looking at a Yamato bass. I think they were pretty budget but made in Japan by Tonga company.

Anyone have any additional info?

I guess I am just looking for info on the history of the company.

I've never seen one in the wild. Just read about them and noticed on auction sites.

Internet searches show that the Japanese manufacturer was Tombo, not Tonga.
Tombo now only produces harmonicas and the like, but dabbled in guitars in the '60s-'70s, mainly producing the Norma brand of guitars.
There's not a lot of info out there.

I am just not aware of this brand and I collect Japanese basses.

I don't usually come across basses whose name I don't recognize. It's nice.

I am looking at buying a Yamato bass. It'sore like an Alembic than a Fender style.

Tombo
Tombo was the only Japanese manufacturer who produced Norma badged guitars. Tombo made Norma guitars from 1965 to 1970. Badged guitars produced by Tombo include Angelica, Asama, Columbus, Condor, Duke, Horugel, Kinor, Montaya, Queen, Regina, Schaffer and Yamato.

Here's a website I tracked down, supposedly recent, based in Viet Nam:

Like a few others, this may have been (or still is) a Japanese brand with their production offshore'd from Japan to cheaper labor in Viet Nam to make their price point, and older gear may be MIJ, but that's just a guess.
