(Also, I'll mention that the Air Force Band in DC is looking for a bass player for their jazz band... Link Removed . I know it's not the orchestra thing, but it's worth mentioning. Perhaps you know someone who is interested.)

I have no affiliation with the Alabama Symphony. I do have an affiliation with the Air Force Band program.

I've been approached by this group on the street in NYC just because I was carrying my bass with me. Steer clear.

Is anything else known about the group or working conditions? I'm under the impression that you would have to live in the housing they provide, but there's no information on what that would be like.

The wikipedia entry says all performers practice a strict Falun Gong "spiritual philosophy". Would that include the orchestra? Still seems mostly harmless, perhaps even enlightening, but it would seem to be the only gig I've heard of that requires a proscribed philosophical doctrine to be lived out daily.

Taken from the website:

''Positions annually entail about five months of touring and seven months at our New York campus. Throughout the year, we provide a monthly salary of $2000 (for most positions), the option of full room and board, and coverage of all touring expenses and hotel accommodations.

In six years, we have grown to three companies, each including dancers, a full orchestra, and solo singers. We have nearly 300 artists touring the world simultaneously, performing all-original music and dance.

Top venues in 2012 included Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the London Coliseum, and, for the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra, Carnegie Hall. ''

and continued about the spritual thing

''As the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, Shen Yun's mission is to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. In promoting this culture and its enduring values through our performances, we have also made meditation practice a daily part of our schedule, finding that it brings great benefits to our performers.

Our company philosophy is based on the spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa. Applicants should be willing to learn Falun Dafa meditation and follow its principles of “Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance.” No previous experience with meditation is required. We suggest candidates familiarize themselves with the practice by visiting www.FalunDafa.org, and reading the books Falun Gong and Zhuan Falun that are posted there and can be downloaded for free''

If they want to pay everything for me, and $2,000 just to learn how to meditate and play my bass, count me in!

I know someone in the orchestra. Yes, there is some kind of spiritual mumbo jumbo. Yes, you live on their campus. Yes, they are very controlling. Yes, it's a lot of touring. Yes, you do tour a lot and play the top performing arts venues in the world. Yes, you do get the specified salary on time and the checks don't bounce. Yes, you could go nuts. Yes, it's a music job where you are paid to perform. If you have a great gig already like the New York Phil, et al, then you are allowed to (and deserve to able to) turn your nose up Shen Yun. If you are waiting tables, racking up miles on your 1995 Saturn in pursuit of freelancing in crappy glorified community orchestras, deferring medical care, asking Mom & Dad for money, and wondering if you will afford rent next month for your cramped s**thole apartment that you share with four wretched roommates, maybe you should give Shen Yun and other opportunities a look.

About Shen Yun:

I actually took the audition because I have a friend in it. I've been, as they say, on the inside, so if you'd like more info about the group let me know. All I'll say for now is that if you're looking for a similar gig to New World, where you live in a place and get paid monthly and tour, there's much more to it.
