ANY metalcore/post hardcore bass players?

Started on guitar when I was 7 switched to bass at 13. I play in a post hardcore act in Phoenix az. We sound similar to Silverstein, a day to remember, saosin, senses fail.

I play in a post-harcore band from MA called Kerrigan. www.kerrigan.bandcamp.com (check out my bass solo on our new single if you'd like!) I started as a guitarist in 6th grade and switched to bass a year later due to big fingers and a bad guitar instructor. I'm 21 now and have been playing ever since.
My influences include Old Man's Child, Erra, the Air I Breather, Our Last Night, the Plot in You, Saosin, the Ghost Inside, Immanifest, Legend, Defeater, old Bury your dead, Atlas (MA), and a few others.

(both are set up to accomadate B E A D strings for 7 string bases)

Pedal Board: TC Polytune pedal tuner, SansAmp Bass Driver DI
Other: Monster cables all around. Planning on getting a Line 6 G90 wireless or something to that degree, though.

I was in a deathcore band once if that counts (us metal heads can be quite picky about sub genres)

we were called Chains of Honor, I guess it was a reference to a video game called Diablo. I hated the name but I didnt come up with it.

At the time i was running a GK 1001rbII through a neo 410, and for a couple songs id use a BOSS ODB-3 overdrive.

as far as technique goes, i did everything in that band. there was a lot of room to experiment so id be slapping and tapping and of course just regular finger work. id even smack the strings really hard with an open hand if there was ever an open chord that i wanted to punch through.

i miss that band a lot now that im thinking about it.

I suppose I forgot the pertinent info:

Band: nothing of relevance now, but I was in a band called Pistola outta NYC up until 2008.

Bass: Elrick gold standard. Maple body with Bartolini J's. Very good growl. Recorded with a pedulla thunder bass but in hindsight I should used the elrick.

Amp: Genz Benz GBE 1200. Started with an Aguilar Pre but the power amp couldn't keep up. The GBE was a monster.

Cab: Aguilar GS412. I highly recommend this cab for deep lows and super punchy mids. I think the High on Fire bass player was using one of these around the same time.

Pedals: constant rotation, but the Keeley compressor was pretty crucial to my sound.

Dang... there were hundreds of good metal band names in that series and your bandmates picked "Chains of Honor"? Brutal...

I have never played metalcore, but I do play prog/tech metal and I started out on guitar because my dad wouldn't let me play bass. He said it was too boring (he played in high school). Switched to bass when I could. Using a BBE Bmax > Crown XLS 1500 > LDS 1515/66/1. Sold my Epi T-Bird, buying an Ibanez ATK805E as my new main bass because I think they sound badass, especially for metal. I used to use a pick but I switched to 2/3 fingerstyles because I like a less cutting tone.

You can generally tell when someone just switched to bass for the band, because they just copy the guitar part on the low string. But bands like The Faceless have bass players who actually PLAY bass and you can hear it in the bass lines. Take that as you will.

PS: Not using any pedals, FWIW.

I was a drummer for the better part of 9 years before making the switch to bass (part of which was spurred on by moving into an apartment and having to give up drumming there). I've played bass for around a year and a half, and play anything from jazz, to ska, to punk, to metalcore, to post hardcore and even alt rock when it tickles my fancy. In terms of influencing hardcore bands, I tend to gravitate to the really melodic sounding groups. August Burns Red, Bury Tomorrow, Blessthefall, The Devil Wears Prada, Memphis May Fire, Wolves at the Gate to name a few.

I was recently in a post-hardcore band and got as far as recording bass on their first single (1.5 minute unmixed unmastered demo sans vocals here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) before getting asked to leave for having a 60 hour per week day job.


As for gear, I use a Schecter Hellraiser 4 (discontinued by schecter in favour of the Hellraiser 4 EXTREME) for my bass (tuned to C-standard for that recording), played through a Hartke LH500 Head into two Ampeg 4x10 and 1x15 cabs. No effects were used inline, but I do sometimes use a Boss ODB-3 to add a little Underoath style grind to the sound. I play almost exclusively fingerstyle, although I'm not above pick use or anything.
