Any mountain bikers??

Today's ride
Winter conditions are amazing this week , we had 6°C and rain monday then 3 days of -20°C , Uber hard packed snow.
So much fun !

I went FAT biking with a friend , bikes were rented.
Very fun and technical in those condition.

I'm not usually one to question another person's bike choice, but I BEG you to buy a quality used mountain bike rather than something from a big box. Look on craigslist or contact your local bike collective. You can really get a very high quality and reliable bike for a small amount of money.

I second that but let me know when you're outfitted. I'll show some top secret trails in the hills of Walnut! :ninja:

Also, you'll have Puddingstone in close proximity. There's also a ton of stuff in the foothills of Claremont.

I dont plan on investing much into this, as Im not sure how long I'll keep up with it. However, I will check out CL and see if I can find something decent for a good price, thanks.
To be honest, I wouldnt even know what constitutes a quality bike. Any suggestions for brands or things to look out for?

Yeah, about 8 or so years ago Id mountain bike with my friend. Puddingstone was a pretty easy trail, thanks for reminding me. I did a lot of biking in Turnbull Canyon and Schabarum Park. A fairly easy trail that was fun to ride was Marshall Canyon over in La Verne.

I'll take any suggestions for some easy trails in the area, as my girlfriend is most likely going to come along.

Well first off, if you get something decent, that can be tuned, maintained, repaired, I guarantee you'll stick with it longer than you will if you get a cheap POS.

26" wheels are out of style, so you can pick up quite nice hardtail 26" MTB for real cheap. Look for brands like... Specialized, Trek, Raleigh, Giant, Gary Fisher, Cannondale, Diamondback (recent years), Scott, Rocky Mountain.

Your local bike collective is a great resource as well. Most of the time they will help you build a bike, or sell you a good used bike that meets your needs. Here's a list of community bike shops in CA. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

... since it seems that I'm liking single speeds, I just pulled the trigger on a new SS frame ... planning to do a frame swap. Although I really like the Haro SS; I'm much more comfortable with a slacker head angle.

If all goes well ... I'll have it built late next week. :hyper:

Umm,,,, I need to get back into it. My 11 y.o. son and I have some great riding - just around the block. State land, nice trails, beautiful scenery.

He is just big enough that he tried a 'full sized frame' bike, and he seemed to like it. Our bikes need some minor and major upgrades, I should get this sorted out before spring.

Not to mention, my 'tool shed' has grown a bit, it needs to be downsized :D

FWIW - two vintage GT triple triangle frames, one "Avalanche" and one "Zaskar" '93 era...

I started mountain biking in '93. The Zaskar was the bike I most lusted after at that time. Nice ride. Have fun with your son. I wish my kids would ride with me, but they don't seem terribly interested. Tried getting my 12 year old to try cyclocross last fall with me, but she wasn't having it.

Recently reconfigured my 05 Gemini- replaced the stubby stem w/a longer/XC-ish one, replaced the 36t ring w/a stock-sized 32 and fell in love w/it all over again. The smaller ring really affected the suspension action- standing/mashing the 36 was bad- mushy, power-sapping BOB; the 32 seems much more responsive- I'm thinking the 32 leans toward lockout/extension under pedaling where the 36 makes it sink into the travel. Regardless, this bike LOVES to be let loose. :hyper:

Looks a nice ride.

We walked a short woodland trail one night last week armed with torches, saws and a rope and cleared lots of branches and a few small small trees that blew down in the recent high winds. Not long before we can ride it again.

Yeah, there's quite a good community of guys out here that maintain the trails. I really appreciate it. I'm going to put time in as well. If I appreciate it, I'm sure others do too.
