Any mountain bikers??

Completed my first ride of any distance today. To my amazement, there was some guy talking trash about "grown ass men" wearing helmets on the trail. I guess his brain isn't important to him, but if he crashes I doubt he'll be saying much more about it.

The reason I can competently write this response is because I was wearing a helmet when I flipped about 10 years ago and landed on my head.

Perhaps that guy wasn't wearing a helmet once during a crash which led to his loss of mental faculties and insane opinion.

Hey all,
I'm just finishing off a few new tunes for this coming weekend gig at one of the area's finest brewpubs and, now, we're off to the North Fruita desert for some of the world's finest singletrack!!
We've had two weekends great of 60 degree weather and the trails are free of wet but have great traction.
I hope that I have the legs for it!
Later, Kirk

Gotta pick that up today. I guided one of the rides and hung out with them a bit when they were here in July.

I've been a subscriber to Bike for something like 20 years.

That's extremely cool that you guided the guys around! I finally read the article and it looks like you have some very supreme riding there Mark.

Given the extreme distance, I doubt that I'll ever make it to Newfoundland so it was very cool to see the pictures of what it's like there.

I hope all goes well with your trails and the new development. I know all too well how awful it is to lose trails to development.

I got some bad news on friday. A large piece of land with a number of excellent trails on it has been put up for sale and is slated for development. Now we have to scramble to figure out how this will affect those trails and the trails on the adjacent public lands. I'm holding out some hope that the main trail up there won't be in the developer's path. I'm hoping they'll end the development at the big power transmission line corridor. I think that's relatively likely because the terrain behind the power lines is steep and rough, abuts a watershed and most of it is above the 190m contour, which is as high as they can currently pump water. Fingers crossed on that. It would suck to lose 2km of trails that I put countless hours into building.

Get all your local bike advocacy groups into the picture. This happened about 10 years ago to a canyon in Utah that was used for years as a trail-running/mtb/horseback riding area. They local advocacy groups encouraged the city to require the developers to include a new trail system. It took a few years to get all of the redevelopment finished, but the system is more sustainable and even better than it was before. It probably helped the developer get more $$$ for each property as well.

Good luck.

Fruita is great! I'm gonna be in St George in a couple weeks. Going to try and rent a bike while I'm there and get out on some trails. Can't wait to get some desert riding in again.

I'm heading out to Palm Springs next month. Going to bring my bike. Looking forward to checking out some of the trails there too. Hopefully it's not too hot. Anyone ridden there?

Yeah, there's a great system of trails behind a shopping center. There's a bike shop that advertises "rentals" that will point you right where to go, it's fun to explore and offers ups and downs.....a good time for sure!!

Oh, and do you mean California?? Cause that's what I'm talking about

Thanks. Yes. I'm not aware of a Palm Springs anywhere else. :p I'll sniff some trails out.

This is what you want. I heard if you don't run Stans, you might want to bring an extra tube or nine. It might even be good idea to bring tubes if you run Stans (I've needed a tube running Stans :atoz:) Lot's of pokey plants!

This is awesome! I'm definitely going to try this out. On longer new rides I usually pack two tubes and extra water/cliff bar. Hopefully that'll be enough. :D

It was pretty cool. Nice fellas and Colin Field is a hell of a rider.

I got a big charge at how he described the admittedly awesome Subnet trail as being "treacherous," "gnarly" and "requiring a bike with a good 6-8" of travel" considering it's one of the least gnarly and most flowy trails out here. It's a lot of fun. Also funny how in order to get the pic on page 71, the riders are riding the trail backwards. :D

Local advocacy is in its infancy but we do have an organization that I'm a part of already and I've begun trying to get people motivated about this. The city's been involved with a cycling master plan and are having public meetings about green space this spring so that will be an opportunity to talk about the (currently rogue) trails up there. The recent trend in development has been to flatten every tree and every rock outcrop on a parcel of land leaving nothing green and it's time that stopped for bigger reasons than MTB trails anyway.

Obviously, the best case would be no development at all up there but that's actually not a good position for us to take. I think something like you mentioned in this post is probably the best attainable outcome.

We have a Palm Springs in the Miami area but no trails really close by. You're talking about the really dry heat one I'm sure. Used to live in Huntington Beach.

Bring lots of water out there.

Ha. I didn't know that there is one in Florida too. :p

Yes, I'm aware of Palm Springs weather. It shouldn't be too bad in March. We'll see. If it's scorching, I might switch up my ride a little bit.

I just registered for my fourth Iceman Cometh Challenge mountain bike race. It goes from Kalkaska, MI to Traverse City, MI on November 8. 30 miles. It's usually pretty cold and often has snow.

It's the only race I do and it keeps me motivated to keep riding all summer to stay in shape. I'm not very fast so don't be too impressed. It takes me about 4 hours.

Couple of days off , first day was absolutely superb winter biking conditions , then it started snowing …. mehhh …….
Got at least a full day of snowmobile trails riding.

Amazing :hyper: :bassist:

I will need wheels for my 456- 26", 15mm FR/135x10(?)mm RR... I'd like to be able to convert to 20mm/10mm thru, for compatibility w/the Gemini if possible. Might as well go tubeless, too- although I might skip that if the deal was irresistible. Gotta be cheap(ish)- if my shop can get them I'll have the employee hookup, so that's pretty much another requirement.
Unlike many of my info requests, I'll eventually *need* to follow through on this- I've been breaking spokes in the RR, and the freewheel body has been threatening to slip. :atoz:

Any/all input, sarcastic derision and general snarkiness is welcomed.:D

"721 rims supplied with Q/r & 20mm Conversions."

What do you mean by "RR" ?
Rear- I'm wanting a rear hub that can do 135mm-width, QR AND 10mm through axle, for compatibility between my two main riders.

Edit: I'll need to see if my employer/LBS can get those, what they go for and if they can do the rear-end swap trick. Thank you, Fokof
