Any one else unable to pick a clear #1 bass?

man I have always love spalted and figured natural finished Basses. Your Spector looks awesome man.

Well if that NS2 isn't cutting the mustard for you I'd gladly take it off your hands!
I've cut it down to three. They are very different from each other and each has a time and place. It would be very hard to part with any, unless I replaced it with a similar instrument
I have a '79 Ric 4001 in autumn Glo that I don't play much. The setup on it is amazing and I keep it around because the only thing that sounds like a Ric is....well.....a Ric
What I consider my #1 evolves or revolves. For many years it was my Telecaster, then I fell for a Jazz and the Tele hung on the wall for many years. Next was the fretless phase with a Hamer fretless being all I played for a few years. Next came the MM SUB because I wanted an active bass. That went on for a few years until I had a J Retro set up installed into my Jazz. Then came the 5 string era with a great playing Tobias but that didn't last, I just could not bond with that B string...
Next came the build your own from parts phase. My first was a lined fretless PJ, once again I could bot bond. Then came three Jazz basses, two of which are fretless. I bonded with the blue active one. Currently I've just completed an Aerodyne fretless...all is well with the exception of the EMG electronics. Once I get something that actually sounds active in it that will be my new #1.
Next came the build your own from parts phase. My first was a lined fretless PJ, once again I could bot bond. Then came three Jazz basses, two of which are fretless. I bonded with the blue active one. Currently I've just completed an Aerodyne fretless...all is well with the exception of the EMG electronics. That's the thing man, I have wanted an NS2 for probably 2 decades. Finally landed one and figured that it would be my #1 for the rest of my life. It is super killer and the craftsmanship is insanely good. But I find myself rotating it with those other 3. I didn't expect that. Hence the thread.
I have 3, 2 are fivers and the other is a P. Just need one: P all day for me, I'm able to do whatever needs to be done with it. Plus, it is sexy as hell.

Everyday is a new day, and I try to approach the bass with that in mind.
I can't say that any one of my 4 is my 'number one' because I'm not ready to make that call!

I'm not clear on why I need to choose beyond what I feel like playing at the time and what suits the music. YMMV of course......

I have had my #1 since 82
my many #2 basses occasionally see more action
depending upon the needs or the day
but Taz will get some playtime everyday,
can't say that for any of my other basses.

I love your VM4. I bet you'd agree though that if it were perfect for a certain gig, that Spector would feel a little out of place on that gig. And vice versa.
I absolutely love Spectors. They are my favorite basses. Partly because they are awesome basses in and of themselves but also partly because they are best suited to the genre of music I am most inclined to play. So I find myself reaching for one of my Spectors most often.
But....switch up the genre and I start eying up one of my other basses to suit the duty.
I think you need several basses to cover all the musical possibilities if you paint with a wide palette of genres. Seems to me you have a nice cache from which to choose.
When is time to pick up your number 1 bass, I remember to go back to basics.
Even the union card says "Fender Bass", and although I play more Jazz basses, the Precision is the one.

Yeah... if I was in just one project for 30 years the call on #1 might be more cut & dried.
Something about a 4-banger for Rock - the J-bass tends to win out.
But then for modern pop the low B is near indispensable - and I've had this decades-long quest for the perfect 5'er. (Got it narrowed down to the Roscoe Century Standard Plus P/J and a Warwick Streamer Stage I - both wonderful, and very different from each other in almost every possible way.)
Those are the main breadwinners. Then there are the niche axes like the ABG and the fretless - hard to say they'd be "#1" but they have their own distinct utility.
I have another category I recently created, the "collection" pieces which will take longer than most to pay for themselves (especially now) and might be hard to justify on a purely rational basis. But I enjoy having them around just to look at & practice on. And unlike some collections, mine does see use.

Just consider yourself lucky and keep all four. Four is not an unreasonable number of basses. And if you really can't decide, that means you really like them all.
Enjoy it for what it is. It's a great predicament in which to be.
