Metal Up Your Ass was going to be the name of their first album, but their record label wouldn't let them use it. The bassist that was before Cliff was Ron Mcgovney(sp?).

Ron McGoveney. He played with them from 1981 until he left (duh) in 1983, replaced by Cliff. The stuff on No Life and Metal Up Your... was written by James.

Cliff has no song writing credits on Kill 'Em All, James was never just a lead singer and yeah, Metal Up Your Ass became Kill 'Em All -- a "stab" at the record execs that wouldn't allow the first title.

McGovney was their first member as solely a bassist. Cliff's bass is what is on the pressings of KEA. James played all instruments except drums on the very first recording of "Hit the Lights". James has sung without playing guitar, back in '92 or '93 after he burnt his arm at the Montreal Monsters of Rock show. John Marshall from Metal Church took over the rhythm guitar duties for a bit. Lesser known members of the band include Lloyd Grant on lead guitar previous to Mustaine joining, and Jeff Warner on vocals very briefly in '82.
Now back to the original topic, as a big Metallica fan who keeps up with all this stuff, and who talked to Jason briefly about it when I met him last week in Jacksonville, FL, I think there's still a possibility of him rejoining the band down the road. He and James have reconciled to an extent and all four of the guys are still buddies. Bob Rock is of course playing the bass in the studio, but has refused to join the band because of the touring committments. We'll just have to wait and see I guess...

I guess that makes three Metclub members on this board because I am also in the club, and it is nice to meet both of you.
I think that there is a chance that Jason will play bass for Metallica again in the studio, but i dont think he will tour with them because of his neck problems. If I remember right James and Jason got together to talk about their problems a while back, I dont remember either "side" saying much about that meeting though.

Hey dudes...I'm a chick!! Thanks for the compliments though, I appreciate them. Anyways, I wouldn't be against Jason playing in the band again, but I really think their creative ideas are different now. And as for the meeting, I think both men needed to work through their stuff, but I don't think they would bring up the future of the band. As much as James has been portrayed as a "controlling" guy who seems obsessed with the band, I highly doubt he would be that insensitive.
