Any road bikers?

Went out and did my best not to die. Too hot and way too windy out there. Did a bit over 34 miles in a bit under 2:40. The humidity and wind conspired to keep me miserable. With the tailwind I was sweating so bad I could barely see - no wind to get evaporation action going on so I was overheating, then going against the wind it was just plain killing me. Add in the sun baking my brains out and I must have been insane to ride today.

GPS says I averaged 14mph and burned a couple thousand calories, consumed 3/4 pint gatorade and am now hitting some ice water and a towel in a slightly cool room.

Bike is out, tires aired, shoes on, heart monitor on and GPS locked. Hot, windy and humid though, and having trouble getting motivated to get out.

Watching a TdF stage is more motivation tham I can handle, I want to ride till my feet bleed :D

I don't ride if it's too hot. I'd probabaly faint or have a heart attack.

I always ride in the evening starting around 1900-2000, it gets dark at some point though.

Not nearly enough fluid. With more than 2 hours of heat, you should be drinking double that.

Did you see this yesterday? (TdF Stage 2) Poor Nibali.

Not sure on fluid amounts, but I'll drink 1 big water bottle, 1 medium water bottle (due to the small frame and top tube slope), a bottle of Gatorade prehydration, and more when I'm done.
I have 21oz and 24oz bottles so I'm just guessing the amount I drink based on how full they are.

What kind of bottles do you use? I have a standard one and the water turns into piss after a while in hot weather. I couldn't find a bottle that's like a thermos.
Camelbak Podium Chill, although I use uninsulated ones.

I would. Might even see if they cover it under warranty or offer a reduced price replacement.

It's a two year helmet and I don't have the receipt so guarantee is out of the question I guess.

It's a new helmet then. I'm waiting for my LBS to buy SPDs and shoes. I think I need to do something about my nuts hurting too.

Is there no end to spending in this sport? I've been broke since I bought the road bike.:atoz:

Definitely a pretty expensive sport, which perhaps makes it hard for some folks to get into.

I spent more than I cared to for my new team. I miss being able to simply wait for last year's pro stuff at insanely low prices. I often got skin suits for about $50 or less. My new team skin suit was almost $200!

I'm also in the market for a new helmet or two. I need an aero road helmet for certain TTs that ban TT bikes and TT helmets. Something like the Giro Air Attack Shield would be nice. Lazer has plastic shells that go on their helmets and block the vents, which can be removed.

Well it's good I'm not too serious into it, I wouldn't be able to afford the skin suits for sure.

Have you seen Tony Martin's helmet in TDF? He was the center of attention on sunday. It's not completely a TT helmet but offers real good aerodynamics. I think Nibali said "it saved me some ~600 watts off energy during a race". (I don't get the watts though, heh)

It's a little hotter than normal helmets they say, though.

Tony Martin has been using the Specialized Evade, which is an aero road helmet. Those are gaining popularity due to the extra speed. The cost is in the vents. Probably not something you'd want on a really hot day of climbing. Flat terrain would at least generate a little relief.

Lazer, note the removable plastic shell.

Catlike. Too bad the US version doesn't have the sunglasses holder.

You probably should replace your helmet every two/three years anyway and if it is cracked and dented it most definitely needs to be replaced. I am sure your guarantee will not cover a helmet which cracked due to a fall. Cracking, compressing, disintegrating, and otherwise becoming unusable is what a bicycle helmet is supposed to do in a fall. They give their lives so that you can keep yours and your brain's! Bicycle helmets are single impact devices and they are all made to the same standards so I buy only the lower priced ones. Same protection, less money, but they may weigh a bit more (and I have 20 pounds to lose before I start worrying about that!) and have less ventilation.

We are to be pitied, eh? There is no end to spending in either cycling or bass playing!

So are any of you going to RAGBRAI? I'm heading out Saturday morning.
