Whatever the amp is designed for in ohms (2,4,8), run it at whatever ohms you choose. Not doing that is like keeping the speed down on my Corvette because it will last longer if you only drive it 55 and never burn rubber or punch on an on-ramp. Do it cause you can. Corvettes are made to be driven and driven hard. If it lasts a few less months, who cares? If I wanted that I would have bought a Honda Civic. If it sounds better to you, then it sound better to you. That's all there is.
It seems to me, more cabs/speakers(lower ohms)+more watts(due to lower ohms)=more air moved=more volume.
Running cab at lower level volume means more headroom.
If you don't get a matching cab, there will be some "issues". If they make a difference, only you can tell by listening. Lots of people run "mis-matched" cabs. If it sounds good, who really should care if they are mismatched?
If you want matched cabs, buy matched cabs. Some TB'rs are liking two vertically stacked 2x12's. Or possibly get a couple of the fEARful cabs or look into the high efficiency Bill Fitzmaurice cabs.
Sell you current cab if you need too. Whatever works for you.
No flaming necessary. I've read a lot of the threads on various speaker cabs, cross filtering, vertical stacking, etc. Ideally, all the "rules" should be followed. Unfortunately, the ideal world is not practical all the time.
