Any tips for choosing an extension cab?

Dude, as billfitzmaurice already said, dropping impedance by adding a cab is not easier on the head, it is harder because it generates more heat. If you insist on refusing help understanding reality and want to stay uninformed I guess there is nothing more to say and the thread should be closed.

I'm not an electronics person, but I have been playing for a very long time and I know what I hear. The difference between one 410 and 2 410's is pretty much always a very huge difference...my favorite rigs have always sounded best at 2 ohms...I understand the heat and shortened lifespan, trust me...but I really don't care...it sounds better to me.

And for the most part, all this mismatched 'phase' talk has some merit, but it's a bit overstated...I don't like to run 10's with 15's...the 10's move quicker than the 15's, which is where all the 'phase' talk comes in...the time alignment bugs me a bit, so I just use a bunch of 10's...for the past few years I either ran eight or sixteen 10's, depending on the venue size...overkill? Oh yeah! Of course it is, but it sounds really great, even at lower volume, just moving all that air , so to me it's well worth it.

Also, switching from 8 to 4 ohms should be a very big difference, regardless of what anyone says here...sorry, fellas! Personally, if I were in the OP's situation, I'd ditch the existing cab and get a 4ohm 410...then if you still want more juice, get a matching 4 ohm cab...stacking two 410's has a bunch of advantages...getting the mids and highs up closer to ear level...it just sounds better.

I do envy the players who can be happy with a single 10 or 12, but I can't enjoy myself unless some air gets moved around, but that's me :)

Umm, not to be a prick, but there is a good bit of misinformation here, starting with the "moves quicker" bit.

As for the OP's question, there are a few more of your cab out there. If getting one of those is impractical, I would suggest selling your cab and buying a pair of identical 410s. If that is also impractical, the only thing you can do is try them out.

This is what i dont get, as the saying goes, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

If volume isnt the problem, i wouldnt bother with an additional cab.

However if its a case of you dont have enough bottom end (where a 15" ext cab) might fix it, that might be a suitable answer.

I guess what im asking is: What are you really trying to achieve with your rig?

Well, its not necessarily "broke". Its functional as is. But we've been playing mostly indoor gigs on small stages. We will be doing a lot mroe outdoor stuff this summer and I dont want to have to push my amp or my speaker cabinet very hard because I like a very clean bass sound and i dont want to have to sacrifice tone for volume.

Im not arguing that just lowering the resistance is easier on the head! In fact, Im not arguing with anyone, except for those who are trying to tell me that my amp doesn't perform better with an extension cab when i know for a fact that it does because I have done it. Could be from the increased speaker area. Could be the increase in usable wattage, could be the lowered resistance. Most likely its from a combination of all 3 of those things. I dont even care! Do you have a reading comprehension problem?

There is nothing wrong with asking people not to hijack my thread and stick to the subject. Common interwebz courtesy.

what about selling the cab you have and getting 2 similar matching cabs maybe the gk neo 410s. May not be your ideal situation but might work out the best. IMO

This may be the best if I cant find a suitable non matching extension. Gonna try to find something that works with what i have for now though. I like cabinet.

Thank you. I didnt think I needed to justify my wanting a second cab, but since I apparently do, this is pretty much why I want another cab. I have had the same experience as you. My amp seemed to like the rig better with 2 cabs. Didnt have to turn the volume up as high to get loud, sound was more articulate, more tone options, cleaner, etc. etc.

you don't have to justify it to me. i'm a big cab guy. i just bought a second 210av for my micro vr stack for the sole purpose of making it bigger, even though i could easily gig with just the one. why? bass = big.

now the 2 ohm thing dukeorock was talking about...do that at your own risk in a head not designed for it.

My amp is rated for 2 ohms but I think I'll be fine with the two 8 ohm cabs. If I didn't need a truck to haul it I'd just get an old ampeg fridge and be done but I need to be able to get it all in my Honda. I'm not an unusually loud player, I just like having the ability to get loud.

:D
I love how he totally ignores the fact that someone else went out there and found a used cab of the exact model he has.
And doesn't listen to anything else anyone is saying.
OP simply came in looking for validation of myths and legends.
Oh well, he can have fun with that :)

But...

OH NOES!!!!

What myth? I love how you just make things up. Lol

By the way, the cab you are referring to isn't anywhere close to me.

Go be an idiot somewhere else.

a) it'd be really helpful if you filled out your profile, like you're supposed to. Regardless, G.C. ships.
b) name calling isn't a good way to win points at all.

Go ahead and buy whatever cabs you want to get your head down to 2 ohms though. You might be loud, and your tone might suck, but at least you'll get MAXIMUM WATTAGE, right?

I'll take your "out" though and go somewhere else. You're just going to do what you want to do anyway without regard to anything anyone's said in this thread.

Hey, chill out you guys. No need to beat him up. What's with everyone looking for a fight?

As I said before, if getting another of your cab is impractical, I would look at selling it and buying two of the same type.

A). Not trying to win points. Especially with you.

B) if you are going to be rude and sarcastic to someone don't be a baby when they are rude back.

C) you are right. I'm going to do WHAT I WANT. I appreciate the input from guys like JimmyM, Bassmanpaul, and several others who take the time to read the posts and give you their opinion. Sometimes I agree, other times I don't. The difference between you and them is they aren't douchebags that feel the need to insult people when they haven't read the thread. You are just another dude without much of real social life outside of an Internet forum.
