A lot of people here seem to not like them, so it's not just you. However, I am a huge Gibson fan. They are one of my favorite bass brands.
I really don't care what you like... or think.

And yet, sometimes I wish that manufacturers would offer some of their guitar designs in a bass guitar. For example, think of the ASAT - a Telecaster bass that actually looks like a Telecaster. As well, I think sometimes it's just nice to have an alternative to standard Fender P & J designs.

I dont like nitro finishes. The gibsons Ive owned, had allways tacky necks on them from the nitro. Part of why I started useing fingerease string and neck spray on in the 70's. The most famous gibson basses are the also very difinition of neck dive. Their pups are also not very well voiced for my desired tone with pick playing. Gibson basses can be nice but there are many better choices for me.
I’ve owned one, an EB3-s, played some of the others a few others, Ripper, Grabber, EBO, Thunderbird and the one that looks like an ES335.
They were all nicely made but just didn’t do it for me in feel or sound.
Same can be said about a lot of other basses including some very high priced botiques.

This is my thought as well. Every time I go looking around a music shop, I always see the Les Paul style basses. I almost always think that they're guitars in the wrong section.
For me, Gibson makes nice guitars. The Les paul bass guitar looks funky to me, and the thunderbird is the ugliest bass I see on a regular basis (in my opinion). They sound fine (but the action on most of them in music shops is too high for me), but they just look weird to me....I guess I'm just a fender guy....until I can afford warwick.
A different looking split off the line of bass evolution?

As long as it's just not a "hate" topic, I guess it is interesting about the differences between other traditional types like fender etc.
The guitar/short scale observation I guess could be part of it?
The symmetry?
I personally think that EB3 walnut stain/black pickguard thing is very attractive.

I like 'em and have one. It gets played a lot and sounds fantastic. I also have a P-bass which gets played a lot. So the answer to the original question is nope, I don't have the same opinion as you.
Used to play an EB3 that was great and the owner wouldn't sell it to me even though it had a repaired broken headstock and the owner didn't even play bass...Oh well. Recently tried a Gibson "money" bass that felt good but the G string popped off the nut 3 times on me. Beside that it felt like a good bass to me. Personally I'm a Precision guy myself but try to keep an open mind. By the way, if some of you people don't like some of these threads why don't you just ignore them instead of bitchin about em? Looks to me like the cat just wanted to chat about basses. No big deal.
I'm a Ric guy, but have owned a few Gibsons. They definitely have their place. I ended up selling My '92 Gibson Thunderbird and a Gibson Les Paul Special bass. Ended up with a couple of Epiphones that sound pretty much the same as the Gibsons. IMHO, mud is mud regardless of the headstock. But sometimes mud is exactly what I'm looking for

I love Gibson Les Paul guitars but for soem reason, I have never been a fan of Gibson basses. I think it's mainly due to the design of the bodies.
For me it's the string spacing. It doesn't suit my large hands/fat fingers as well as Fender/Ric/Yamaha basses. However I prefer Gibson (and Ibanez) guitars for the same reason.
Everyone who thinks Gibson basses are just mud: I got a letter and a number for ya - G3.

Many dudes & babes rock Gibson basses. I happen to be in a Fender mode but, if I played a Gibson & it wasn't for me, I wouldn't slag on the company.
