Pretty much the same. I went 25 years with just the Ripper and it was great. It still is. Now I have four basses, each one has its own cool thing going on. The one I like best is always the one I’m playing.

Some people intentionally put non descriptive thread titles on some of their posts just so that more people will read them. Out of curiosity, ya know? And it works. Can’t stand those people. The Nerve!

I give them at least a little credit though when they put it in a very specific forum, so ya pretty much know what it’s going to be about.

Enjoying a similar syndrome with my tennis gear - I teach, coach high school teams, and play on my own. Baffling how one day I feel like I have perfection in my hands with one racquet or another bass, but then the cosmic furniture gets rearranged and it's all different. No predicting it whatsoever.

All I've learned to be picky about - or maybe honest with myself about - is a decent fit. I know it when I feel it, but know I've tried to force it in the past when it wasn't right and it didn't go well.

Fortunately I have three basses that are all rather unique and I completely adore them, warts 'n all!!

Today I was playing my Ibanez Premium & it occurred to me that this bass is muy overkill for what I do. I don't even use the preamp in it, kept in passive mode.
It does smell nice & is lighter than my SRX (which cost 6x less), but the difference is only 2.1 ounces (1/8 lb.).
oh yeah, & it does sound a little better (not a huge difference)

Alas, it was my birthday present to myself, so I will live with the luxury of owning it

You know what, Joe.................I don't really care very much anymore either. At age 66, this has been a major revelation to me. I don't really care very much anymore, about anything!

But that goes for bass also. All I really care about is how many songs do I know where I can play bass lines. I don't really care how my bass sounds. As long as it has bottom, nothing else matters to me. I can now really appreciate all of those old recordings up to about 1978 where the bass was a "mud puddle".

I love all basses too. P, J, single coil P, Stingray (that's all of them isn't it?) Play it and shut up. Produce bass. That's my job.

I care, I care a lot. It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.

As for tool value, I mod all my basses and most are rearranged parts. I put a personal investment into the instrument and keep it if it really works for me. Maybe a tool just to maintain my sound. But sentimental value can be excess baggage too.

Eh, I sort of care. But then, I only HAVE one bass, so caring or not caring has tended to produce the same result since about 1996.
