Anybody still making wooden knobs?

If you look at mine above they are skirted, with Pau Ferro bodies, Cherry caps, a slice of Ebony veneer between the two woods, and a Pau Ferro position dot in the Cherry cap. One of them is a stacked knob (which actually counts as two knobs, price-wise). I had the skirted and the stacked altered slightly so the stacked would look as close to a regular skirted knob as possible.

They were not just simple one-wood knobs, they were very detailed and multi-wood custom jobs made specifically for my bass (Pau Ferro FB and Cherry top)

They were NOT cheap. They WERE worth it.

Knurling can be done by THG, as well. Straight, diamond, custom, etc.

I love the diamond patterning. I'd thought of doing that a while back, but never really came up with a good method. I'm sure it is time consuming however you do it.

If he makes them on a lathe, theres a tool to etch this pattern. i did it in metal shop back in high school. Took about 4 seconds

Really? 4 secs? I wonder if this guy used the same setup for wood.

Takes a little longer with wood, in my experience. You have to be a little more careful with wood, especially the softer stuff.

If you have the right tool (aka a metal lathe) it is super east to make those patterns. I am going to try my hand at making some costom knobs in the near future.

The top set of King knobs seem to be acrylized. That would keep the wood hard and make the etching go smoother I assume.

+1! I had David King build some stacked wood knobs for my Jerzy Drozd. They are amazing!

I still want to make my own. Especially as how I have the wood scraps from my bass build to use. My question is; Where do you get the brass inserts? Other than that, with a little time, it shouldnt be that hard.

Don't bother with the brass inserts if you have split knobs with splines on them just press fit them.....t

You'd have to watch out for them splitting down the grain as well. we all get used to being pretty tough on metal and plasic knobs. I'm thinking of going beck to chicken head knobs as I can see where they are set - get really hacked off when I can't see the little dot and have to rotate to the end and back to know where I am in poort light. Maybe those Fender amp knobs like Muddy Waters used on his Tele would be worth a try.
