Been through all of those. However, I was in Whittier in 1987. House needed to be replaced. I was one of the few who had earthquake insurance. Still was a nightmare to get things done. Took 2.5 years to finally be able to call it "home" again.

There was an aftershock a couple of days later during which we couldn't stand up or walk due to the shaking. So much for "escaping" or some other hero type move. :atoz:

It sounded like a freight train was going through the bedroom. So loud that I couldn't hear the screaming coming from my wife and daughter. I could only see their mouths open.

Remember it like it was a couple of minutes ago.

The whole state caught fire one year and got within about 500 yards of my house. That sucked.

The eye of hurricane Dora went right over top my house in New Jersey way back in '64. That sucked for my parents. I thought it was cool as heck.

People say we're all nuts but that kid still lives in my brothers and I, We all get together and celebrate a good hurricane.
I'm not a big drinker but those boys get crazy and give each storm a run for it's money damage wise.
It's basically become an excuse to party. And several of them have been spent driving around the ocean front during the storm. Yes I'm always DD and no you don't let your friends drink and drive in a hurricane you wait until it passes and there's not much that isn't already destroyed.
One of these years we're definitely gonna learn the hard way.

Two earthquakes. i thouht tanks were patrolling the streets during the first one. We couldn't hear each other speak even though we were yelling. Rocky foundation + quake is loud, very very loud...

And the general (natural) stupidity of mankind.

Ice storm that shut down local supermarkets and power for about a week and a half. I was a kid at the time and remember having no real problems getting through it.

Some things dad did that made it bearable:
-Had lots of already processed wood ready for the fireplace.
-Lots of food and water already stockpiled.
-Board games to keep me, my little sister and our neighbors kids entertained.
-Eventually got a power generator from work but by then things were getting better.

There were lots of issues with elderly and disabled people not being able to handle it. Lots of people don't stock extra food and had a bit of a crisis. I remember people walking from the supermarket with their sleds hauling groceries.

Quite a few tornadoes while working the missile fields (USAF) in Wyoming and South Dakota. Several hurricanes while in VA, FL, and later here in NJ. Last year the earthquake that centered in VA. Major blizzard while in SD, were snowed in for a week. Basically shut down the air base for several days. One drift went entirely over our house. We had to climb out the bathroom window to get out and shovel the front door out. Husband had an old Ford Econoline van at the time, it was completely under the drift with only a corner of the hood poking out of the drift.

Nothing that did any noticeable long lasting damage so far, but the odds will probably eventually catch with us.

I was hit by an awful earthquake a few years back. Luckily I was on the outskirts so it didn't hit me too bad. Got woken up in the middle of the night. Thought something had fallen on the bed so fell back asleep... Yeah it wasn't that bad really :p I think the most damage it did was knock off a chimney somewhere. Thank god we don't get bad earthquakes very often in England.
