Anyone else getting this CL scam where you are?

Educate me - Is there any risk in replying via e-mail to such a scam? They get your e-mail addr and that's it, right?

First of all, you lose the confidentiality of the CL email. It's also one more piece of information they can get immediately, along with your location. Then they try to speak with you and get more information (starting with address, banking information, phone number, etc.).

OP here…I’ve seen all the scams(plus all the insanity that ends up in my email spam)over the years, every variation, not to mention the chronic lowballers and incoherent responses from real people who have trouble with English as a first language. Of course I ignore that stuff. But after having run CL ads with sucessful results in the last year or so without much in the way of this sort of thing, it just struck me that all of a sudden I get two responses worded exactly the same. I was just wondering if it was a trend happening all over the country, similar to(as noted in another thread)ads popping up in “musicians” in multiple locations that essentially were steamy, horny hook-up solicitations, but still featured text that read like a legit musicians wanted inquiry, but with the same wording.

I would give stuff away before I list it on CL...
Overall, I’ve done pretty well, in spite of some of the numbnuts responses. I usually sell some fairly esoteric stuff, which weeds out most tire-kicker types. In the 90’s and 00’s I picked up on a bunch of vintage Sunn gear, out of a fit of nostslgia, and because I was finding killer deals. Now I’m in Marie Kondo mode, jettisoning what I don’t need, or the lesser conditioned of two of the same item. With the rise of stoner/desert/doom rock, the value has gone up on this stuff, and all the buyers have been 20- and 30-something hipster types, so I have no complaints. Of course, where I am I have access to 5 different regions of potential buyers, and that beats all the Ebay/Reverb seller’s headaches. For a variety of reasons, I don’t do FB.

I don't get it? ... Are you trying to sell something and this response arrives in you email inbox? ...
That’s how CL works; the supposed would-be buyer inquires to an encripted address generated in your ad. That gets translated and transmitted/relayed by CL to your email addy that you provide in the first place. You then see the inquirer’s supposedly actual email address with their message, and then you make the decision to get back to them or not, depending on your gut feeling.

In my area, the CL mail is now two-way. I can't see a responders email address anymore than he can see mine (assuming he's not trying to hack me).

Neither do I. At my age, I don't need the hassle. If I can't sell something on TB or Reverb, I will go consignment with a local brick and mortar. I have no patience with low ballers, scammers and thieves.
Reverb can be just as much of a pain in the ass, with shipping and the potential whining about condition; the good CL transactions have outweighed the bad for me, and I’ve met some cool people. But that doesn’t mean I don’t watch my every step along the way. I always meet at a Starbucks or cop shop, and if I’m selling an amp, run it off my car electricity. Also, I run video of the entire proceedings on my phone in my shirt pocket.

I commend you for having patience, health and probably age on your side. For me, with profound COPD, I want as little human contact as possible because I cannot afford to get any variation of COVID. Even a common cold could be a problem. I would rather lose money ;).
