Anyone else into automatic wristwatches?

Tudor has been hitting it outta the park lately. The lineup is sorted by size as well as style. I’ve gone to smaller sub-40mm cases for my 7-inch wrist. My 42mm and larger watches stay in the box now.

When getting a P39 I thought about a Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925. It’s a prefect prettified urban desk diver in silver alloy. The standard gilt Black Bay 58 in 41mm is also outstanding.

Even the chronographs got the Black Bay treatment in 41mm cases. The Panda is cool.

I grabbed a Pelagos 39 a few weeks ago. I also have my eye on a Nomos Ludwig Neomatik 39 for another dress watch. The one below is a Max Bill.

Nice! I’ve tried the Pelagos 39, and it’s utter perfection IMO. Just a perfect fit, and I love titanium. (I have two titanium Citizen Eco-Drives, which are great.)

I also have my eye on a 39mm Nomos—the Orion. No way my wife would approve the expense at this point, but I’ll try to start laying the groundwork. Patience is key. I’ve done that many times with basses!

I found this random story on the YouTube comments of a watch restoration vid. It's about a hand wound watch but I felt people here might like it:

My father told me a story that reflected the close love he shared with my mother. Mom had given him a watch on their 25th anniversary and dad wore it proudly every day. About ten years later, mom suddenly took ill and had to spend some time in the hospital. At the same time, dad's watch stopped. Thinking the battery had run down after all those years, dad took his watch to the local jewelry store. The jeweler looked at the watch, looked at my dad, wound the watch and gave it back saying, "Ted, I remember selling this watch to Emily a long time ago; it doesn't use a battery."

Dad was perplexed, finally realizing that from the day mom had given him the watch, they had never spent more that a day apart. Apparently each night before going to bed, mom would go down to the den and, while tidying up dad's things, would wind his watch. Dad finally realized that his watch was powered by much more than a replaceable battery; it was powered by the strength of the bond between them.

There have been a lot of advancements in protection from magnetism. Not sure if that's your issue, but maybe try a watch that is less susceptible?

Anyway, it's interesting you mention this. Not the first time I've heard of folks who can't seem to keep a watch running. I used to dismiss this as operator error, but maybe there's something to it.

A demagnetizer for watches is cheap and easy to use and can help if your watch is sensitive.
putting your hand in a dryer or a car’s engine compartment can affect the works.
I had a watch with issues and bought a demagnetizer and it seems to have worked.

What’s ‘reasonably-priced’ look like to you? That would help narrow it down. Any special requirements eg short or long length, sweat resistance? After wasting money buying many disappointing cheaper straps, I have ended up going for custom-made, single-layer shell cordovan - most straps are too long to be comfortable for my small wrists, and the hot & humid Hong Kong climate tended to destroy leather straps in short order and got stinky very quickly. I find bracelets very uncomfortable so that wasn’t an option either. The cost is higher upfront for sure, but I’ve saved overall by not having to replace straps.

The watch came new to me with a croc style leather strap (original ORIS), but it's not what that model should have come with, so the dealer must have swapped it at some point before my buying the watch. Weather/sweat resistance would be nice, and I want something black that's not too showy (keeping the focus on the watch, itself). Reasonable price would be not more that, say, $100, or so. The lug width is 22mm. My other ORIS (Big Crown ProPilot Day Date) has an excellent ORIS bracelet, but I want to stick with a leather strap for the Artix GT Chronograph.

Do you care what leather the strap is made of- calfskin or croc or ostrich some other species? If that watch was mine, it'd be on a corner-stitched black calfskin strap with white corner stitching, or maybe black ostrich leg with black stitching. because you can use 80/120, you should be able to get either of these on eBay for less than $100.

Of course, "Can do" may mean any number of things to different people. My wrist is 6.75" in circumference, so a standard 80/120 puts me on the innermost hole with the tongue side wrapped halfway around my wrist and visible above 12:00. It will fit tight and not move, but that's not a fit to me. I want my straps to use the center hole (or one of them, in the case of an even number) and I want the buckle springbar in the center of the back my wrist. I have to go bespoke to get that fit.

My watches run smaller than your Artix- largest in my rotation is 39mm and I'll probably keep everything at 40mm and under going forward. they probably average a lug to lug measurement of 47mm or so. With those cases, I have no problem using a 110/70 or some variation that gets me to around 180mm. I wear my watches just tight enough to not move, no tighter, no looser. Just a FYI because we share a wrist circumference. The shape may be different and influence fit by a few mm.

Google Veblenist watch straps, Vgreen watch straps. I've bought from both, both offer custom lengths, lug widths, buckle widths, thicknesses, hole placement and size/shape, stitching type and color, etc.

Not sure what my wrist size is, but it's pretty small, and yet my hand is relatively wide. When I picked up my Oris new from the shop (largest size Big Crown, IIRC), which originally came with a leather strap, I had them change it to the OEM metal strap. Then it went back and forth to the technician three times before it was both the correct length for my wrist with the clasp closed, yet wide enough for my hand (with my thumb tucked in) when opened. I guess that would simply not have worked with the leather bracelet, as it is a fixed length.

Very nice ORIS! Leather straps may be fixed in length but holes can easily be added if needed to make it fit better.
