Anyone else like brass nuts?

I put one on a Precision and it made a world of difference in terms of open note tone and just avoiding snags at the nut, etc.

Anyone else like brass/get a brass nut installed as a standard mod?

Well they definitely are more prone to never needing replacement. If you like brass I'd suggest anyone getting a Warwick adjustable nut. That little bit of extra adjustment really is nice.

I like them. I have a few. They'll never fail. And the open strings are ringing off metal that is structurally closer to a fret. The opens don't sound quite as different.

To be crystal clear, I do NOT like snags at the nut.

Even so, I've had basses with brass nuts in the past, but did not care for the sound. They felt way too cold and clangy.

I bought a heavily modded ESP/LTD B-1006 last year and it came with a brass nut that allows me to adjust the height of each string independently.

Well... I don't actually dislike them. But, I have no plans to put them on every bass I own, either. At the moment, I have 2 basses - out of 24 - that have brass nuts:
- My '73 Rick 4001. It's a lefty, but according to the company I bought it from, it was converted to a righty and back - twice. So, the surprisingly cheesy stock plastic Rick nut was... trashed. I put a brass nut on it, mainly because... well, back then, that's just what you did. So, the '70's vintage vibe, more than anything else...
- My '95 Alembic Epic. I didn't put that adjustable brass nut on it; it came that way from Santa Rosa, CA... There's no way it's coming off, either...
I also have 4 basses with aluminum nuts. They came from the factory that way; I've no plans to change them, either.
On the rare occasions I replace nuts, now? I like the Tusq nuts - a lot...

And they're pointless. There's only one nut height that is right for a given bass. Even if you change string gauges. Or adjust the truss rod. It's just one more needless adjustment that can go wrong. The only time you need to change the nut height is if you refret or grind the frets down.

I honestly don't know if it made a difference to this modified glarry over the plastic nut but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I like them, but depends on the tone goal of the bass. Some of mine have it, some don't.
But same with bone, I like those too.

If you want your open strings and fretted notes sound uniform, it would make more sense to get a zero fret. In combination with a high quality graphite nut.

I like them just fine but wouldn't change a good nut of another material to brass. I don't think it makes much difference. They do tend to last a touch longer and they don't smell like bone when you work on them.

I have a very narrow neck bass that i managed to break the nut down the middle of the G slot, twice in a short time after buying it new. My guy put a brass nut on it after the replacement nut broke. 30 years later and still problem free.

i haven't met a nut material yet that i couldn't get along with --- i like 'em all! on my fretless axes: they're almost more of a 'string guide'.

the brass nuts i've had, however, were admired at the time.
