Anyone else wish Fender..

A P Lyte with an alder body? Will it still be lyte? They were made with basswood or mahogany. Mine's basswood. It's a crap wood for bodies if you ask me but it is lyte. Mahogany would be better. Basswood finally has me convinced that wood does matter.

I would like to see a Lyte that's updated, though. There was a lot of suckage on the originals. I thought the pickup and preamp sucked, and it could have been built with a sturdier neck. And of course no basswood, which sucks all the life out of vintage style pickups. That pretty much leaves the tuners and the bridge as the only things that didn't suck. The bridge is especially great. And yet, even with all that suckage, mine has been my main player since I got it a few years ago.

Were the burst finish and Foto Flame Lytes also basswood?

I agree with your updates. Pickups and preamp are an easy swap for me, but a quality neck is a must.

I'm divided on this one. I LOVE Sunn, I pretty much only use Sunn amps, but I'm not sure I could ever look upon Sunn by Fender amps as the same. I'd rather see them sell the name of to a small business with an operating model ala Reeves, where it's all hand wired, beautifully made amps like the originals, instead of Fender mass produced equipment.

Either way though, ALL HAIL THE RISING SUNN.

Agreed. An updated Lyte (perhaps with a less cheesy name) would be great. Maybe it could be chambered? I suppose that would drive up the price though. Definitely needs new electronics. I liked the neck on mine once I sanded it down and refinished it with tung oil.

It could be a real hit with all the...um...mature bass players with wrecked shoulders! I'm sure I'm not the only one out there.

They're all basswood except for the Deluxe, which is mahogany. Here's a thread comparing the two with pics, and that wood on the sunburst is very plain like basswood:

Man, the necks on the P Lytes would be godly if they were just made a little better. The stripe on the back of mine is starting to protrude, and weather changes affect it more than most. But it plays so nicely that I ignore its faults. Would be nice not to have to, though.

Well that proves every Fender you owned was alder and awesome ;) But not all Fenders were made with alder bodies. Alder and ash are what most of them are made with, but they've used several different body woods over the years. I've got the basswood on my P Lyte and the ash on my 76 Precision to prove it.
