Anyone ever just get tired...

Of their basses?

I have two I would never sell, a third (the 5er) that I'm still getting comfortable on but most things in my bass and guitar collection just seem to be 'there'. Anyone else ever get this feeling about their gear? Is it just a phase and will I be sorry if I unload some of the herd?

I've gone through phases of convincing myself I don't need some and regretted it (Rogue VB00) and others which I off loaded (Mexi Jazz) which I don't miss at all.
So I'd say if your going to sell and regret it then keep it.
If you're going to upgrade something you really want then go for it.

I wish I had enough basses to complain about one of them. ;)

It's not like I have a 'ton' and it's not like they were uber-expensive, but being more a drummer than anything, I drum more than I play bass or play guitar.

And I do work at a music store, maybe that's the problem! ;) .

It's more just I look at my Aerodyne and a couple of my cheap guitars (like low-end Jackson kind of thing) and wonder why I still keep them and I was wondering if anyone else just gets the sudden urge to keep like two or three basses and two guitars and ditch the rest?

This last year I've also 'tried' a few different varieties of basses including a fretless, acoustic and a 5 string and I've found I still go back to 4s, fretless is ok and acoustic I use occasionally at jams, but they will never get the same amount of play as my other basses. My 5 is slowly taking over, so it's in the keep pile.

I am the proud owner of 14 basses. They are various shapes & sizes, from China-cheap to vintage MIA. IMO they're all cool in their own way. If I ever get to thinking: "why am I keeping that one?" usually a little trip to the case and an hour or 2 of quality time, and I remember what attracted me to that bass in the first place.

Needless to say, I don't do a whole lot of selling. Variety: my favorite flavor!!

I buy and flip instruments ALL the time. If theres something I don't really care for about it, I don't see the point in keeping it around if there's something out there I'd rather have. Not to mention buying and selling can make you money AND gives you the excitement of having new gear. My mindset is, hey, if I REALLY end up regretting selling/trading a bass, I can always pick one up later.

That being said, think hard about it before you get rid of them. I only get rid of an instrument after I think it through and reach a DEFINITE decision. If you aren't sure, give it some more playing time until you decide.

I go through bouts of this all the time...it will pass. Keep what you have and add to the collection.

By something new (new to you, buy used) add to the collection. It is fun having a lot of gear around...

Each person is different, for me each bass I own tells a different story about my life, some good some bad.
the only way to know if you'll regret it is to unload one or two.
There have been a few that I ve sold , that I'd love back a few that I'd burn if i ever saw them agian.

I think that each bass has a personality, but I have a few I love to play so much that the others I feel really get no love.

That and I really want a P-bass back in my aresenal, which would be going back to the start of my bass playing 10 years ago.

I've also realized recently that I will never be a quarter of the bass player that I am as a drummer, so I guess that is impacting my 'hoarding' issue.

I'm thinking of starting with Aerodyne and a cheap guitar, and trading them for a P or a few cymbals. I'm not strapped for cash and I can buy gear if I want it, I just think it's a waste lying around when I don't play 'em, hence the thread. I really value your guys' (and gals) opinions so far! :) .

my one functioning bass is never leaving. my silly big guitar collection often gets questioned, but they all serve a purpose, and they are all special to me somehow.

like bassplayer8953, ive got cheapies (copies and rare korean epiphones) to obscure vintage models (77 gibson es175 thinline, ampeg heavy stud), and i love them all. the second i wonder why i need 2 big hollowbodies, i remember that the 77 cant go outside and the no-name can.

id only ever need a couple basses (as i only have a couple sounds) but guitars can go on for days.
