Anyone ever see Weezer live?

My total exposure to Weezer is the 15 minutes I spent learning "Hash Pipe" for my cover band. Lots of other people seem to get into them, I personally have never seen the appeal.

Agreed with JimmyM too on the whole Josh Freese thing. They must be paying him a nice check. That gig probably taps about 10% of Freese's abilities.

I always figured they'd be like a heavier version of Bare Naked Ladies.

Haven't had much exposure to either band, but to this I would have to say, "not really". BNL has a more lighthearted, fun vibe to them. Weezer's got more the quasi-emo, dark humor thing and a lot of that may have to do with the bands' respective front men.

Put it this way, I wouldn't book those bands together on a double bill.

Saw Weezer in Toronto about 7 or 8 years ago and it ranks as one of my worst concerts ever, they were having some guitar problems and switching instruments after EVERY song! on top of that they were just lifeless and boring for the entire night, I wouldn't see them again if it was free.

I must say I saw them in concert here a week ago (my baby brother won 2 tickets haha) and they did give a really great job at entertaining! Like the music isn't my cup of tea but I did enjoy the show!
The band did a cover of MGMT's "Kids" which I felt was better than MGMT's haha and in mid cover the lead singer put on a Lady GaGa wig and they started playing "Poker Face" haha it was entertaining.

I seen them at Ottawa Bluesfest. They were actually quite good.... I would go as far as to say brilliant...

Every good band is going to have their leader, their squabbles, their differences, their splits, their turnovers. Despite the apparent problems they had with a few band members leaving, they have a pretty good ensemble now, who, when I seen them on stage, were having a heck of a lot of fun, and 30,000 + fans at the concert seemed to agree. Doesn't mean they never put on a bad show, just means that they are capable of putting on good ones as well.

that's because rivers hired scott shriner and josh freese to play bass and drums, and they've both got the hired gun "i don't care, i got other stuff" attitude. and the drummer plays rhythm now so i guess he sees that as a promotion ;)

it was bumming me out that josh was missing devo shows, though. he did the album then misses most of the gigs because of weezer. otoh, devo got this sub dude jeff friedl who kicks total ass, so it's all good.

I've seen them twice.

Once at Coachella when I was just waiting to see Janes Addiction come on. (I was quite bored).

And another time when they opened up for Blink this time I was bored yeah again. Although the girl I was with at the time thought they were amazing.

They played their songs well. Just can't get into the Nerd Rock stuff. Don't find any of it cute or clever. Their music doesn't speak to me. But I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

When I saw them, Pat (the drummer) actually played most of the leads. If I understand the situation correctly, he's playing most of Rivers's guitar parts live to allow Rivers to do the "frontman" thing.

I think the dictator thing has mellowed out in recent years. They all had had writing credits on The Red Album, and they all sing lead on a song or two live. I'm not a fanboy (they're playing here this weekend and I'm not going), but I have all the albums and they put on a great/fun show when I saw them.

Also, Scott Shriner is a tone monster. Maybe the best live P sound I've ever heard; outside rock show playing against 2/3 guitars and keyboards and you could hear it perfectly.

Saw them about ten years ago. Felt really bad for the opener (Dynamite Hack, anybody remember them?) because the crowd was chanting for Weezer NON-STOP before, during and after their set. I've never seen a worse crowd. They were happy once Weezer started playing, but screaming and cheering so loud I couldn't really enjoy the music. The band played well and put on an OK show, but it was one of my worst concert-going experiences.

I saw them support The Foo Fighters a few years ago. They were brilliant.

No wait, what's the one that's like brilliant? Horrendous. That's the one. Truly shocking. Weak sound, everything sounded the same and they seemed to have no stage presence at all. Thank the various gods for The Foos though, who were superb.

Well then it's obvious Weezer are making money doing what they do. But I wouldn't go as far as to say Scott has a hired gun attitude. About a year ago he said in a BP article he was azz broke and had absolutely nothing musically working for him until Rivers called him for the gig, so no, he didn't have "other stuff". He seemed very appreciative of the job. He also said the other members got to write songs, sing, and record them on the album. But I see nothing different about Rivers' band leadership than Billy Corgan, who also seems to be doing just fine. Trent Reznor anyone? What's the difference?
As far as what reasons Matt Sharp left for, I could care less. That dude was a terrible bassist and even more terrible singer, and to me Weezer got way better and sounded better when he left.
