My buddy called me last year to see if I would be interested in trying a Tom Petty tribute band.
Yes, there is a lot of them. His voice fits Petty's quite well. 4 months later the band is ready.

I did a Jackson Browne tribute some years ago. It was fun. Lee Sklar and Bob Glaub did some wonderful licks on JB's material.

I played an Elvis tribute (with costume, wigs, etc.) and now a Springsteen one (more of a cover band, no wardrobe or accurate instruments).

I'll bet that was a fun show to be a part of - so many from 2 of the finest bassists in the business. Did you actually have a lap steel player in the band to play David Lindley's parts, or were they done using a slide?

Be prepared to travel far & wide as the act gets stale quickly if hopping about a geocentric market.
I did an Elvis / assorted tributes act a couple decades back. It got old fast and borderline embarrassing.

Regarding the JB tribute,Yeah, it was fun while it lasted, most definitely. Our lead guitarist had a lap steel. He approximated the sound and parts very well. We also had a dedicated fiddler too. We used to extend out “The Road” to let him stretch out a bit. Our guy really had the tone on it.

Yes, I’m in two and a friend is playing in another one. They are very popular right now, emphasis needs to be on TRIBUTE and not “covers of a particular band.” That means looks, wardrobe, instruments, amusing anecdotes, and overall feel/aesthetic of the show.

Yes. Currently a QUEEN Tribute. Easy being the bassist since John Deacon was never a major focal point. The Lead Singer had Freddy down pat and the guitar player is working to improve his Brian May. Time will tell if this band goes anywhere.
We did a Taylor Swift and one last year. Stopped because the singer didn’t want to travel more than 90 mins outside of our base. It was honestly pretty cringey and embarrassing after the excitement of the first 2 or 3 gigs. It also took up a ton of rehearsal time from the main band gigs because we spaced the gigs out too far as a result of not wanting to travel.

The travel comment brings up a great point - band goals must be aligned and everyone needs to be on the same page.
No different than any other band that hopes to have any level of success.
If you guys are any good it should sell itself! The tribute I’m in hardly even markets and we are selling out small theater shows and just landed a spot at a pet big music festival this summer. Venues are calling us, one venue we did recently added a second show last minute (for additional pay) because they sold out immediately and had a large enough backlog to fund it. The band we’re doing has a lot of mass appeal (like Queen) so I imagine you guys will catch fire if you’re in the right ballpark.
I was in Queensryche tribute band years ago. It was a lot of fun and we played for bigger crowds than I ever did as an original act. We didn't quite have the look perfect but the songs were dead on. Our singer was classically trained in opera and could nail the Geoff Tate impression. Unfortunately, one of the guitarists had some psychological issues and it brought the whole project crashing down. Still talk to the other guitarist to this day - he's playing in an Iron Maiden tribute nowadays.
