Anyone gigging a Tribute band?

So Anyway, I met a guy the other day who was forming a Cake tribute band.
He's having limited success trying to build the band with working players that he already knows.
It seems no one wants to fully commit after he tells them they'll primarily be playing opening sets for free.

The trick to a good tribute is picking a band with plenty of “hits”. It also helps if there aren’t 10 other local tributes for the same band.

I actually like seeing a good tribute band but there is no band that I would want to play only their songs night after night so it's a no for me.

Yeah we basically play the same 25-30 songs all the time it’s getting a little old honestly.

Some people pick a band they like and they had a couple of hits and there’s a ton of filler. It’s not really that marketable and it’s a borderline vanity project. We kicked around a Toto tribute for about 5 minutes and as great as they are they only had a few legitimate hits that everyone would know. Plus you need some monster players to do it any justice.

One of the benefits of a Stones tribute is they have so many hits and even semi-hits, that we can mix up a bunch of tunes from gig to gig, plus add a few lesser-known ones for our own amusement (like '2000 Light Years From Home'), and even throw in 'Angry' from the new album, just to be relevant.

I am in a Doors tribute called Waiting for the Sun. We will be doing our first gig next month in Hilton Head, SC. We use authentic 60s gear like a Gibson organ and Fender Rhodes Piano Bass.

Not a tribute band with the looks, but I'm in a Grateful Dead cover band that's played a few sets that have been very well received by Deadheads at the venue. In fact, I've rarely had performances generate so much enthusiasm from the crowd. We're looking for a drummer, so it's in a holding pattern, but we're hoping to play some longer gigs over the summer, possibly some private parties. Heck, we only need a few tracks to fill up an hour!

In the Philly area, there is a huge market for this, so I think even a small-time band like this could do well--provided we can get a decent drummer.

In 2019 I was in a project trying to become a Stones cover band. We were sounding great and had several tracks nailed down, but it fizzled due to BL issues.

I'm in a Stones band but have been trying to do a Dead band in Victoria BC, which is not a very large city with that many Deadheads (especially being in Canada); in fact, however, there's already 2 other local Dead cover bands that do well enough, it seems. Unfortunately we've been unable to find a proper drummer and have put it on the shelf for now.
